Description: This Wan-Eta Cocoa canning jar was manufactured in Boston, Massachusetts between 1930 and 1960. The quart-size jar has a number "8" printed on the bottom. During World War II, conserving garden produce for later consumption became a vital activity to support the war effort. Canning and drying food was essential to increasing the food supply on the home front, for troops abroad, and for hungry citizens of Allied nations. The canning process prevented fruits and vegetables from spoiling. By removing oxygen from jars holding produce, undesirable bacteria would not be able to grow. Good vacuums created in canning jars formed tight seals that keep liquid in and air out. View on Ohio Memory.

View of Terminal Tower from the Cuyahoga River. The Terminal Tower is located at 230 W. Huron Road in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Built for $179 million by the Van Sweringen brothers, the tower was to serve as an office building atop the city's new rail station, Union Terminal. Originally planned to be 14 stories, the structure was expanded to 52-floors with a height of 708 ft and rests on 280 foot caissons. Designed by the firm of Graham, Anderson, Probst & White, the tower was modeled after the Beaux-Arts New York Municipal Building by McKim, Mead, and White. The Terminal Tower opened in 1928, two years before the entire Union Terminal complex was complete, and would remain the tallest building in the world outside of New York City until the completion of the main building of Moscow State University in Moscow in 1953. The Terminal Tower would continue as the tallest building in North America outside of New York City until the Prudential Center in Boston, Massachusetts was completed in 1964. A Nicholson Transit Co. ore boat is pictured in the Cuyahoga River. The Nicholson Transit Company was started by William Nicholson in 1928. The Great Lakes shipping company was one of a number of enterprises run by Nicholson and his family. Between the businesses owned by the Nicholson family, they handled cargo throughout the Great Lakes from the time of loading in one port, through transit to a second port, to unloading in the port of arrival. The Nicholson Transit Company was forced out of business in the 1960s as a result of the government subsidized railroad competition. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Poster advertisement for Goodyear Pneumatic Cord Tires for trucks. The poster features black-and-white photographs of trucks using the pneumatic cord tires while making an 8-day round trip between Akron, Ohio, and Boston, Massachusetts, in 1918. Pneumatic tires rely on a network of cords to provide their shape and enough tensile strength to maintain sufficient inflation. Frank Seiberling (1859-1955) founded the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in 1898. Located on the banks of the Little Cuyahoga River in Akron, the company operated in a converted strawboard factory with thirteen employees. Although its main product was tires, the company also made rubber poker chips, fire hoses, and horseshoe pads. By 1926 it had become the largest rubber company in the world. View on Ohio Memory.

He founded Joseph Breck & Sons, a seed and agricultural implements wholesaler and retailer in Boston, Massachusetts. He wrote several other books, including "The Young Florist" (1833) and "The Flower Garden" (1851). Orange Judd (1822-1892) was an agricultural researcher and the editor of "American Agriculturalist" magazine. His Chicago firm, Orange Judd Company, published agricultural and scientific books. Description: Map of the Ohio Company Purchase. This plan illustrates the first tract of Ohio land to be sold by the Continental Congress to the Ohio Company of Associates, also known as the Ohio Company. The company was formed on March 1, 1786, by former Revolutionary War officers and soldiers, Rufus Putnam, Benjamin Tupper, Samuel Holden Parsons and Manasseh Cutler in Boston, Massachusetts. Parsons, Putnam, and Cutler were chosen as directors while Winthrop Sargent became the secretary. The company established the first permanent settlement at Marietta in April 1788 and sent pioneers from New England to settle the Northwest Territory. In 1796, the Ohio Company divided its shares and ceased to exist as a land company. View on Ohio Memory.
