The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center is a complex comprising several buildings related to the life and presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes. Located in Fremont, Ohio, the center comprises the Rutherford B. Hayes Museum and Library and Spiegel Grove, an estate encompassing the Hayes home, residence to several generations of the Hayes family. Opened in 1916, the Rutherford B. Hayes Center Library was the first presidential library and one of only three for a 19th-century president. The Center is supported by the private foundations, the Ohio Historical Society and Hayes Presidential Center Inc. The library holds the 12,000 volume personal library of Rutherford B. Hayes, as well as materials relating to his military and political career, particularly of his presidency from 1877 to 1881. Description: The Rutherford B Hayes home was built by his uncle and guardian, Sardis Birchard. Due to the difficulty of obtaining materials and labor during the Civil War period, the house was in construction for five years from 1859 to 1963. The original portion of the two story brick home contained eight bedrooms and a wrap around veranda. The veranda was Hayes' favorite part and he made plans to enlarge it to a veranda with a house attached. Hayes moved his family into the house in 1873, prior to his terms as Governor of Ohio and then President of the United States. Upon his return from the White House in 1881, Hayes renovated the house and built an addition. The addition included a library for his 12,000 book collection, a large reception room, three bedrooms and indoor plumbing. The most spectacular improvement was a four story walnut and butternut stair case. It led to a rooftop lantern which offered a 360 degree view of the Hayes estate, called Spiegel Grove. In 1889, the Hayes built another addition to the home. They demolished a back wing and replaced it with a larger one, in anticipation of visits from the grandchildren and friends. The new wing contains a large dining room, a kitchen, two servants rooms and three bedrooms. Unfortunately during this latest construction, Mrs Hayes died. Description: George Crogham was born on 15, 1791 on Locust Grove farm in present day Louisville, Kentucky. His father was William Crogham of Dublin, Ireland, and his mother was Lucy Clark, sister of William and George Rogers Clark. After graduation from the College of William and Mary, Crogan joined the army in 1810. He fought in the Battle of Tippecanoe and served in Fort Meigs, located in present day Perrysburg, Ohio. He was promoted to the rank of colonel after his leadership in the battle of Ft Stephenson during the War of 1812. Fort Stephenson was located in present day Fremont, Ohio. Later he lead a troop that was defeated in the Battle of Mackinac. After the war, he resigned form the Army and became Postmaster of New Orleans. Later he became an inspector general of the army. He fought in the Battle of Monterrey during the Mexican-American War. He was married to Serena Livingston, grand daughter of Robert Livinston. George Crogham died of cholera in 1849 and was buried at the site of Fort Stephenson in Fremont, Ohio View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph is an exterior view of Spiegel Grove, the former home of U.S. president Rutherford B. Hayes, in Fremont, Ohio. A portion of another building is visible on the photograph's right side. Spiegel Grove is the former home of President Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822-1893). The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center currently occupies the site, which is open to the public under the direction of the Ohio Historical Society. Spiegel Grove was constructed from 1859-1863. (“Spiegel” is the German word for “mirror,” and the home is named after pools of water that form on the estate’s grounds after a rain.) The home’s original owner was Sardis Birchard, Hayes’s uncle and guardian, who used Spiegel Grove as a summer residence. Hayes became Spiegel Grove’s owner in 1873, and he made it his permanent home. Upon completion of his presidency in 1881, Hayes expanded the home to make room for his 12,000-volume library, to provide additional room for guests, and also to install indoor plumbing. In 1889, Hayes ordered the construction of another addition to make room for his children and grandchildren who commonly visited. This final addition created a thirty-one-room mansion. Both Hayes and his wife, Lucy Hayes, died at Spiegel Grove and are interred on the grounds. Spiegel Grove remained in the Hayes family until the first decade of the 1900s, when the family deeded the property to the State of Ohio. In 1916, a museum and library opened on the site, commemorating Hayes’s political and military contributions to Ohio and to the United States. This was the first presidential library commemorating a United States president. Spiegel Grove is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is located at 100 North Park Avenue. The building is built of brick and stone and features Grecian style architecture with Doric sandstone columns. In the 1930s, the original 1844 courthouse became the north wing, as an expansion was needed. The expanded central and south section are compatible with the older structure. Description: This photograph shows a portion of Birchard Park in Fremont, Ohio, along a residential street, probably McPherson Boulevard. A note on the reverse of the photograph reads "McPherson Blvd street parks." Dedicated October 19, 1871, the land that now constitutes Birchard Park was donated to the city by Sardis Birchard. Birchard was the uncle of President Rutherford B. Hayes, brother of Rutherford B. Hayes Senior. After the death of his brother, Birchard took an active role in his nephew's life, including overseeing his education and purchasing Spiegel Grove for Hayes' home, now the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center. Birchard settled in Sandusky, Ohio, now called Fremont, where he became a successful banker and merchant. Birchard made many public donations to the city, including the building and endowment for the public library (Birchard Public Library) as well as two public parks, one of which is Birchard Park. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

The Hayes House stands on 25 acres of wooded land that were part of the President's estate on Spiegel Grove. Hayes and his wife, Lucy retired at the estate following their residence in the White House and both spent their last days in the home. The building is at 100 North Park Street. The brick and stone building features Grecian style architecture with Doric sandstone style columns. During the expansion in 1933, the original court house was preserved. During the early years of his life, U. S. President Rutherford B Hayes practiced law at the court house. He filed a petition to have the town name changed from Lower Sandusky to Fremont in 1849. The reason was the number of towns within 100 miles radius of the Sandusky River's source, Lake Erie bearing the name Sandusky.
