Description: This photograph is of Fred Mosley, a 47-year-old farmer from Centerburg, Ohio. Caption reads: "No. 213, Fred Mosley of Knox County, Electrocuted November 30, 1938 for the Murder of his Wife, Mrs. Philla Mosley, at Centerburg, Ohio." In 1885, the Ohio Penitentiary became the site of all executions for prisoners on death row; formerly, executions had taken place in the county where the crime was committed. In 1896 the Ohio General Assembly mandated that electrocution replace hanging as the form of capital punishment. Throughout the 1930s, the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus, Ohio displayed photographs of inmates who were sentenced to death. A total of 315 prisoners, both men and women, were executed in the electric chair known as “Old Sparky” between 1897 and 1963. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This is a postcard of, most likely, a dormitory. There is handwriting on the back which says: "Mt. Vernon Academy, District#6, Knox Co.", though it is unclear if this is correct. More information needed. Mount Vernon Academy was opened by the Seventh-Day Adventists in 1893 with a missionary cause. It was enlarged and converted to a college in 1905. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This Gothic Revival home in Gambier currently houses the Kenyon Review, an influential and honored literary magazine. The Kenyon Review was established in 1938 after the president of Kenyon College, Gordon Keith Chalmers, brought John Crowe Ransom, a distinguished poet and critic, to Gambier Hill. Before housing the Kenyon Review, the home was called the Peter Neff Cottage and was used as the home of Kenyon College's Deans of Students. The home was renamed to honor John L. and Mary C. Finn, whose son, James, was a Kenyon Review trustee who provided the funding to restore the home. Peter Neff graduated from Kenyon College in 1849 and helped develop the first successful tintype photographs in America and was later involved in the oil and gas business in eastern Ohio. Description: Photograph showing flooded downtown streets in Mount Vernon, Ohio, January 21, 1959. Visible in the photograph are downtown businesses including Ralston's Barber Shop, a B.F. Goodrich service station, Louie's Shoe Repair, Larry's Carry Out and the LK Diner. During the statewide flood of January 1959, rains of 3 to 6 inches produced the most destructive flooding in Ohio since March 1913. Soil frozen a foot deep was overlain by a snow cover. A band of heavy rain fell across central Ohio on the headwaters of many of the state’s largest rivers, causing the snow to melt, and with the ground frozen, nearly all of the water poured into streams. Streams reached flood stage from January 21 to 24, killing 16 people, forcing 49,000 from their homes, and causing extensive damage to homes, businesses, roads, and bridges. The streets of Mansfield were under four feet of water, and industries were closed by floodwaters in Youngstown and Canton. Columbus was the most severely affected of Ohio’s major cities, with many streets flooded, 100 homes badly damaged, and 3,200 evacuees cared for at Red Cross shelters. One-third of Chillicothe was flooded when the Scioto River broke through a levee of sandbags. High water and ice jams on the Sandusky River flooded Upper Sandusky, Tiffin, and Fremont. Despite its intensity, deaths and damage were not as great in 1959 as in the March 1913 flood. Following the destruction of 1913, flood-control reservoirs were built, and by 1959, there was better communication of warnings, more organized rescue work, and more adequate design of bridges and other structures. Description: Farming is a business, and detailed records are required. This Joe Munroe photograph shows a farmer and his handwritten ledger, accounting for the individual sheep on his farm. The ledger has photos of each animal along with notes that are useful should the farmer choose to sell the animal later. Joe Munroe's career began in 1939 at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He served in the Air Force during World War II and then joined Cincinnati-based Farm Quarterly magazine. Though raised in Detroit, agriculture became an important subject of Joe's photographs. He moved to California in 1955 and free-lanced, taking magazine assignments and selling his own work. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Postcard of Daniel Emmett and his home in Mount Vernon, Ohio. Emmett is considered to be the author of the antebellum song "Dixie," written in 1859, which became the unofficial song of the Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War. He was born in Mount Vernon in 1815 and taught himself the fiddle, and later became associated with minstrel shows and helped to define that genre. Minstrel shows traveled around the United States, presenting skits and musical performances. Emmett also composed many other songs, including "Old Dan Tucker," "Turkey in the Straw," and "The Blue Tail Fly." He died in 1904. View on Ohio Memory.
