Description: Mary Ann Bickerdyke was a nurse and health care provider for the Union Army during the Civil War. She was born on July 19, 1817, near Mount Vernon, Ohio. After attending Oberlin College, she studied nursing in Cincinnati. During the Civil War, Bickerdyke traveled with the armies of Generals Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman, treating wounded soldiers, setting up field hospitals, and working as an agent for the United States Sanitary Commission. After the war was over, she assisted Union veterans with legal issues and helped them secure their pensions. Bickerdyke died on November 8, 1901, in Bunker Hill, Kansas. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: These print blocks were set by hand on a printing press to create the score for Dan Emmett's "Dixie's Land." One print block is engraved with the score for Dixie, the second shows a portrait of Emmett, and the third depicts a minstrel caricature. Daniel Decatur Emmett (1815-1904), a minstrel and musician from Mt. Vernon, Ohio, composed the song "Dixie's Land" in 1859. During the Civil War, "Dixie" was a marching song for Southern troops. After the war, Emmett made his living performing it and other songs on his violin. The print blocks measure between 2 x 3 inches (5.08 x 7.62 cm) and 4 x 6 inches (10.16 x 15.24 cm). Description: Photograph showing Michael Dorrian, right, during a campaign event at Mount Vernon Plaza in Columbus, Ohio, taken by photographer Allen Zak for publication in the Columbus Free Press newspaper. Dorrian was campaigning as the Democratic candidate for Columbus mayor. The Columbus Free Press began as a bi-weekly publication in Columbus, Ohio, in 1970. An underground newspaper, it replaced the Ohio State University publication The People, Yes. The earliest known issue of the newspaper appeared on January 4, 1971. The newspaper underwent a series of name changes over the decades, with titles including the Columbus Free Press & Cowtown Times (1972-1976), the Columbus Freepress (1976-1992) and The Free Press (1992-1995). The paper, which covered many liberal and progressive causes, was an alternative to mainstream news sources in central Ohio with the slogan “The Other Side of the News.” In 1995, the paper ceased publication briefly before reemerging as a website in early 1996, and returning as a print publication under the Free Press title in the form of a quarterly journal in 1998. Published under various frequencies during the first part of the 21st century, the Free Press again became a nonprofit monthly publication in 2017 with both a print and web presence, published by the Columbus Institute for Contemporary Journalism and operated by a volunteer staff and board. Description: Musician and composer Daniel Decatur Emmett used this violin during the Civil War. It was given to him by a pupil in New York who left for the Civil War. Emmett later had the lion head decoration put on the violin. The violin measures 31.49 by 9.84 by 4.33 inches (80 by 25 by 11 cm). Daniel Decatur Emmett (1815-1904) was born in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. He wrote many songs that gained popularity in minstrel shows, including "Dixie," "Old Dan Tucker," and "Turkey in the Straw." He showed a talent for music at a young age, and ran away from home at the age of 17 to join the army, serving as a drummer. After a two-year stint in the army, he helped to form a minstrel troop. He began composing songs in African-American dialect for these performances. In 1888, Emmett returned to Mt. Vernon, where he lived until his death. He became known as "Uncle Dan" and was something of a local character going about town in theatrical-styled clothing and occasionally performing his songs. View on Ohio Memory.
