Description: Caption reads "When Over 100 Lives were Lost" This photograph (ca. 1935-1943) is of an illustration or engraving, most likely from a newspaper, depicting the explosion of the steamboat Moselle, in the Ohio River. On Wednesday April 25, 1838, between 4 and 5 o’clock, the new steamboat Moselle left the wharf in Cincinnati and continued upstream about a mile, for a quick stop in Fulton, to pick up more passengers and freight, even though the boat was already loaded beyond capacity, before continuing to it’s final destination in Louisville and St. Louis. It is estimated that there were approximately 266 passengers on board after the stop in Fulton, a great majority of which were emigrants, of most of them German or Irish. A crowd had gathered to watch the steamboat depart, as it had already gained a celebrity-like reputation of being an extremely fast boat, though she had only made two or three trips thus far. Captain Perrin, anxious to bolster the reputation of the Moselle, collected as much steam as he could, in an attempt to overtake another boat which had just recently departed for the same destination. Onlookers and passengers alike later commented that the steam sounded strange, as the pressure built to unsafe levels. Just as the boat was shoved from the quay, an explosion took place, so great that it was like a “mine of gunpowder” exploding, as all four boilers simultaneously burst. The destruction was horrific, with pieces of boat, freight and bodies thrown into the river and upon the shore. About one hundred and fifty people in were lost that day, whether killed, or ultimately declared missing and one hundred and seventeen people were saved. An investigation later took place, which resulted in stricter regulations regarding freight and passenger capacity, and which declared owners and officers ultimately liable for any and all injuries suffered as a result of safety regulation negligence. The sport gained popularity over the next few years in the United States, with 10 races being scheduled during the 1917 season. Description: Dated ca. 1935-1943, this photograph shows two men in a motorboat on the Ohio River near Cincinnati, Ohio, with a houseboat behind them in the distance. The Ohio River is the largest tributary of the Mississippi River and is about 981 miles long. It begins at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers in Point State Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It forms the border between Ohio and West Virginia, as well as Ohio and Kentucky, Indiana and Kentucky, and Illinois and Kentucky. It joins the Mississippi near Cairo, Illinois. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. Description: Collected for use in the Ohio Guide, this photograph shows the aftermath of the Great Flood of 1913 in Greenville, Ohio, one of the many Ohio cities impacted by the flood, a result of several major rivers throughout central and eastern United States overflowing due to heavy rainfall from March 23-26. Once levees and flood walls failed, the Great Miami River flowed across western Ohio, killing nearly 430 people statewide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Description: A view of Buckeye Lake in Licking County. Buckeye Lake began as a small pond that Ohio's American Indians called "Big Swamp" or "Big Pond." In the 1820s, the state began construction of the Ohio and Erie Canal, and workers built a dike that diverted water from the south fork of the Licking River into the pond, which then became known as the Licking Reservoir or Licking Summit Reservoir. As canals declined in use in the second half of the 19th century, the Ohio and Erie Canal was abandoned and began to deteriorate, but the canal's decline did not mean an end to the Licking Reservoir. Instead, the state legislature renamed it Buckeye Lake and made it a public park in 1894. By the early 20th century, the reservoir had become an attractive location for recreational activities, including through the construction of Buckeye Lake Amusement Park, and the Columbus, Buckeye Lake and Newark Interurban Electric Railway, an electric trolley system, connected the park to nearby urban areas. In 1949, the state of Ohio designated Buckeye Lake as a state park. The amusement park began to decline in popularity by the late 1950s and continued to deteriorate in the 1960s. Although the amusement park no longer exists, Buckeye Lake State Park still attracts a number of visitors to the area each year, in addition to the many people who own vacation homes near the lake or live in the area year-round. Description: Caption reads: "Steubenville, Ohio. 1937 Flood. Sand works and Penna R.R. bridge." The greatest volume of water ever known to pass along Ohio’s southern shores flooded all Ohio River communities during the last two weeks of January 1937. With damage stretching from Pittsburgh to Cairo, Illinois, 1 million were left homeless, with 385 dead and property losses reaching $500 million, further worsened by the fact that it occurred during the Great Depression and just a few years after the Dust Bowl. Crests were 20 to 28 feet above flood stage and 4 to 9 feet above previous records. Six to 12 inches of rain fell in Ohio during January 13-25, 1937, totals never before or since experienced over such a large area of Ohio.
