Description: This is a photograph depicting a young boy posed by potted plants and cactus. This photograph was taken by traveling photographer Albert J. Ewing, ca. 1896-1912. Like most of Ewing's work, it was likely taken in southeastern Ohio or central West Virginia. Born in 1870 in Washington County, Ohio, near Marietta, Ewing most likely began his photography career in the 1890s. The 1910 US Census and a 1912-1913 directory list him as a photographer. A negative signed “Ewing Brothers” and a picture with his younger brother, Frank, indicate that Frank may have joined the business. After 1916, directories list Albert as a salesman. He died in 1934. The Ewing Collection consists of 5,055 glass plate negatives, each individually housed and numbered. Additionally, the collection includes approximately 450 modern contact prints made from the glass plate negatives. Subjects include infants and young children, elderly people, families, school and religious groups, animals and rural scenes. In 1982, the Ohio Historical Society received the collection, still housed in the original dry plate negative boxes purchased by Albert J. Ewing. Description: Dated ca. 1935-1940, this photograph shows cattails growing along the Ohio River. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. Description: The zebra swallowtail (Eurytides marcellus) is a common butterfly that can be found in all of Ohio's eighty-eight counties, but especially in the southern portion of the state. It is a member of the Papilionidae (swallowtail) family and prefers to live in open areas of forests and river bottom areas during the months of April through October. It feeds primarily on the pawpaw plant. This species has a wingspan of 2.25 to 4 inches (5.7 to 10.2 cm). In Ohio there are more than 150 species of butterflies. Twenty-seven different species of butterflies representing five families can be found in the Ohio Memory Online Scrapbook, including all seven species of butterflies that are listed as endangered in Ohio. Butterflies are a part of the order Lepidoptera (from the Greek words lepis, which means scale and pteron, which means wing). There are nearly 17,500 species of butterflies world-wide. Description: This pipe in effigy (a likeness or representation) of a raccoon, made of gray and white mottled stone, was excavated from Tremper Mound, a Hopewell culture site located five miles north of Portsmouth in Scioto County. The effigy straddles the cylindrical bowl and the animal's legs are hanging down from the body, not flexed. The tail is out of proportion to the rest of the body as a means of additional support. The eyes are drilled; remnants of copper stain suggest they had been inset. The right margin of the bowl, the animal's right shoulder, and the platform have been restored. The effigy pipe measures approximately 1.5" x 3.5" x 1.25" (3.81 x 8.89 x 3.18 cm). This pipe is part of a large collection of pipes found at Tremper Mound. The pipes were carved of Ohio pipestone, a silica-based material that can be easily carved when freshly quarried from the hills east of the Scioto River. The pipes represent a variety of animals significant to the Hopewell, including owls, wolves, deer and beaver. Skilled Hopewell craftsmen carved the pipes with flint knives and some are embellished with pearls or copper. In Ohio, the Hopewell Indians (100 B.C.-A.D. 500) built burial mounds and large earthen enclosures in geometric shapes (circles, squares, and octagons) to mark the places where the people gathered periodically to participate in many social and ceremonial events. Some of these sites were quite large--the Newark Earthworks complex extends over a 4-square-mile area. Description: This pipe in effigy (a likeness or representation) of a squirrel is made of olive gray and red mottled stone. It was excavated from Tremper Mound, a Hopewell culture site located five miles north of Portsmouth in Scioto County. The squirrel is shown sitting erect with its front paws relaxed at chest level. Its toes on all four paws are indicated by incised lines. The tail is erect against the back with the tip curled. There is some restoration on the bowl at the effigy's "shoulders" as well as left foot and portions of the platform at either side of the effigy. The effigy pipe measures approximately 1.5" x 3.5" x 1.25" (3.81 x 8.89 x 3.18 cm). This pipe is part of a large collection of pipes found at Tremper Mound. The pipes were carved of Ohio pipestone, a silica-based material that can be easily carved when freshly quarried from the hills east of the Scioto River. The pipes represent a variety of animals significant to the Hopewell, including owls, wolves, deer and beaver. Skilled Hopewell craftsmen carved the pipes with flint knives and some are embellished with pearls or copper. In Ohio, the Hopewell Indians (100 B.C.-A.D. 500) built burial mounds and large earthen enclosures in geometric shapes (circles, squares, and octagons) to mark the places where the people gathered periodically to participate in many social and ceremonial events. Some of these sites were quite large--the Newark Earthworks complex extends over a 4-square-mile area. Archaeologist William C. Mills identified this as a Buffelhead duck. Made of mottled dark olive gray stone, the pipe measures approximately 1.75" x 1.5" x 3.25" (4.2 x 3.6 x 8.25 cm). Some parts of the pipe have been restored. This pipe is part of a large collection of pipes found at Tremper Mound. The pipes were carved of Ohio pipestone, a silica-based material that can be easily carved when freshly quarried from the hills east of the Scioto River. Description: Two photographs show the crowning of the Carnation Festival Queen in Alliance, Ohio. The photographs were taken in the 1960s. Alliance became known as the "Carnation City" in 1876, when Dr. Levi Lamborn began giving William McKinley a carnation prior to their congressional debates. McKinley, who was a close friend of Lamborn, considered the carnation a good luck charm and wore them throughout his career as Ohio governor and later president of the United States. The carnation became the state flower of Ohio in 1904 in remembrance of the assassinated president. Description: Three photographs show a visit by an unidentified woman and child to the Franklin Park Conservatory in the 1950s. Franklin Park opened in Columbus in 1852, when it housed the first Franklin County Fair. From 1874 to 1884 Franklin Park was the home of the Ohio State Fair. In 1895, Franklin Park Conservatory opened to the public. The Conservatory was modeled after the Glass Palace at the 1892 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The Conservatory housed animals that later became part of the Columbus Zoo in the 1920s. Ameriflora '92, an international flower and garden show, held events at the Conservatory in 1992.
