Description: This photograph is an image of the public library in Clyde, Ohio, ca. 1970s The building has a stone exterior, a tile roof, and a distinctive round corner. The names of famous authors are carved into a granite strip that borders the exterior walls. The Clyde Public Library was established in 1903 and housed on the third floor of Union School. With the aid of a $10,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie and matching community support, a public library was constructed and opened in October 1906. The library underwent an extensive renovation and expansion during the 1990s. Clyde achieved literary fame because American author Sherwood Anderson (1876-1941) spent most of his boyhood here. He based his most famous book, the short-story collection "Winesburg, Ohio" on the town of Clyde. Anderson was born on September 13, 1876, in Camden, Ohio. His family later moved to Clyde, where he spent most of his youth in that small town. When he was twenty years old, Anderson moved to Chicago, Illinois, and spent two years working at odd jobs. In 1898 he fought in the Spanish-American War. After completing his military service, Anderson returned to Ohio and enrolled at Wittenberg University but left school after only a year. He returned to Chicago and began a career as an advertising writer. In 1904, Anderson married the first of his four wives. His first three marriages ended in divorce. He published his first novel, "Windy McPherson's Son," in 1916. It was followed three years later by "Winesburg, Ohio," whose negative portrayal of Clyde and its people offended many residents. Among his more popular works were "Poor White" (1920), "The Triumph of the Egg" (1921), "Horses and Men" (1923), "Many Marriages" (1923) and "Dark Laughter" (1925). In 1927, Anderson purchased the Marion (Virginia) Publishing Company and became editor of two weekly newspapers. During this period he lived in Chicago, New Orleans, and near Troutdale, Virginia. He lived in Virginia for the remainder of his life, although he and his fourth wife traveled extensively. Anderson died of peritonitis while on a trip with his wife to South America in 1941. Anderson's writing influenced a number of authors, including Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, and William Faulkner. It was at Anderson's urging that Hemingway's and Faulkner's first novels were published. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph from the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus is of Samuel Tannyhill, age 27. His formal attire suggests that the photograph was taken during his trial or sentencing. Tannyhill, convicted of kidnapping and murdering Shirley Bradford of Fremont, was the 300th individual to be executed via the electric chair in Ohio. The caption at the bottom reads: “No. 300 Samuel W. Tannyhill Sandusky County, Ohio, Legally Electrocuted November 26, 1956, for the Murder of Shirley Bradford.” In 1885 the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus, Ohio, became the location for all executions, which previously took place in the various county seats. In 1896 the Ohio General Assembly mandated that electrocution replace hanging as the form of capital punishment. The Ohio Penitentiary regularly offered tours as well as souvenir photographs and postcards of the building and prisoners on death row. A total of 315 prisoners, both men and women, were executed in the electric chair known as “Old Sparky” between 1897 and 1963. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Caption reads; "Ivy covered factory bldg Christy Razor Blade Co. Fremont, O". The Christy Knife Company, located at 905 Dickinson Street in Fremont, Ohio, is one of the county's oldest business and is still owned by the Christy family. The company was organized in 1889, after Russ J. Christy invented and patented a nickel-plated serrated bread knife. Production began on Arch Street in Fremont, after L. H. Cress and other Fremont investors purchased stock and patents. Extensive building improvements were made in 1894 it handle the increased production of the addition knives produced. Christy rebuilt and expanded the building after fires in 1902 and 1910. In 1917, Christy purchased land at Dickinson and State Streets and again increased the size of his workplace. In 1906, a single edged razor was invented by Christy and carried the company financially through out World War I. After the war, Christy invented a retractable blade pocket knife, which carried the business through the Great Depression. D. Lamar Christy managed the company from 1920 to 1955 when Earl Christy took over. During this period, a surgical blade knife for a Cincinnati surgical instrument company represented eighty percent of the company's revenue. When this contract was lost in 1961, Christy's nearly collapsed. Description: The First Presbyterian Church of Fremont, Ohio was established on November 30, 1833. The congregation met in various buildings until they were able to build a church in 1847. It was built on the corner of Park Avenue and Garrison Street. Due to the growth of the congregation, a cornerstone was laid for the new Romanesque style edifice on the site of their former place of worship. Three years later, it was dedicated debt free. It became the first tall-steepled church downtown in the city of Fremont. Stained glass windows were added in an extensive renovation in 1893-94, bringing it to its present day appearance. Description: The home of President Rutherford B, Hayes was a 31 room mansion built by his uncle and guardian, Sardis Birchard. It was built as a summer home that Birchard could share with his nephew and family. The construction period was from 1859 to 1863. It took five years because of the difficulty obtaining workers and supplies due to the American Civil War. The home had eight bedrooms and a wrap around veranda. The veranda was particularly loved by President Hayes. In 1873 he wrote in his diary "The best part of the present house is the veranda. But I would enlarge it. I want a veranda with a house attached." Hayes spent the next 20 years planning and improving his home. He moved his family into the home in 1873, where they lived until he became Governor of Ohio in 1875. Them he became President of the United States, moving back to Fremont in 1880. At that time, he added a library to house his 12,000 books, a large reception room, three bedrooms and indoor plumbing. A four-story walnut and butternut staircase leads to a rooftop lantern giving a 360 degree view of Spiegel Grove, the Hayes Estate. In 1888, they demolished a back wing and added a larger one, in anticipation of family visits. The new large wing has a dining room, kitchen, two servants rooms and three bedrooms. Mrs Hayes died during the last construction, and President Hayes died in January 1893. They both died in the home they loved in Spiegel Grove. View on Ohio Memory.
