Leader equipment was produced by The Marion Manufacturing Company, one of the two early steam engine companies based in Marion, Ohio, in the 1880s. Description: Dated October 6, 1936, this photograph shows the photosynthesis laboratory at Antioch College in Greene County, Ohio, in Yellow Springs. The photograph's caption reads "The photosynthesis laboratory C.F. Kettering Foundation. Here students have opportunity to take part in important scientific research into the nature of chlorophyll." Antioch College was founded in 1852 as the first nonsectarian, co-educational institution in the nation to offer the same educational opportunities to both men and women. It was also among the first to offer equal educational opportunities to African Americans. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Seven 2" x 2" (5.08 x 5.08 cm) photographs show astronaut Neil Armstrong, comedian Bob Hope, and Ohio Governor James Rhodes in the grandstand at a homecoming parade held for Armstrong in 1969. More than 80,000 supporters greeted Armstrong upon his return to Wapakoneta, Ohio on September 6, 1969. Hope served as marshal for the event, and guests included "Tonight Show" sidekick Ed McMahon, and Dr. Albert Sabin, who invented the polio vaccine. Hope joked with the crowd that Armstrong was adjusting well to life on Earth after his space visit, "but he keeps throwing his shoes out the window and eating toothpaste," referring to the system of trash disposal on early flights and the practice of packaging astronauts' food in tubes. Neil A. Armstrong (b. 1930), the first man to walk on the moon, was born in Wapakoneta. He received Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in aeronautical engineering from Purdue University. After serving as a naval aviator from 1949 to 1952, Armstrong joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) in 1955. For the next 17 years he worked for NACA and its successor agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). As a research pilot at NASA's Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, he was a project pilot on many pioneering high-speed aircraft. Armstrong transferred to astronaut status in 1962 and was assigned as command pilot for the Gemini 8 mission, which was launched on March 16, 1966. As spacecraft commander for Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing mission, Armstrong gained the distinction of being the first man to land a craft on the moon and first to step on its surface. Bob Hope (1903-2003), born Leslie Townes Hope, moved to Cleveland from England with his family in 1907. After graduating from East High School in Cleveland, Hope spent time as an amateur boxer before entering show business. He worked in vaudeville and on Broadway before turning to radio and then television. Hope first began performing for troops stationed overseas in World War I, and continued through the first Gulf War. He starred in more than fifty films and was awarded five special Oscars for humanitarian work and in 1985 he was awarded the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors for Lifetime Achievement. Description: Alexander Winton (1860-1932) was a Scottish-born American and pioneer automobile manufacturer, seen here driving his Winton automobile. He settled in Cleveland, Ohio, and started the Winton Motor Carriage Company in 1897, with his automobile credited as the first commercial sale of automobile in the United States. He patented over one hundred designs and even gave Henry Ford access to his steering designs before a race. Ford and his assembly line out-produced Winton's custom-made cars and put him out of business in 1924. Winton eventually focused purely on engine design, and his Winton Engine Company was bought by General Motors in 1930. He died in Cleveland, Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Dated 1920, this photograph shows a man sitting and speaking into a voice recorder during the presidential campaign of Warren G. Harding. This photograph is part of the Warren G. Harding Photograph Collection. Warren G. Harding, the 29th President of the United States from 1921-1923, was born near Marion, Ohio, in 1865. At age 14, Harding attended Ohio Central College, where he edited the campus newspaper and became an accomplished public speaker. He married Florence Kling de Wolfe in 1891, and embarked on his political career in 1898 by winning a seat in the Ohio legislature for two terms. Harding became Lieutenant Governor in 1903 for two years before returning to the newspaper business. While unsuccessful in a run for Governor in 1910, Harding won election to the U.S. Senate in 1914. Political insider Harry Daugherty began promoting Harding for the Republican presidential nomination in 1920. His campaign, known as “The Front Porch Campaign,” was centered on low-key speeches given from his home in Marion, Ohio, pledging to return the country to “normalcy.” Harding easily won the election, gaining 61 percent of the popular vote. On August 2, 1923, Harding died from a massive heart attack and is entombed in the Marion Cemetery. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Neil Armstrong constructed this airplane model while he was a student at Purdue University. Born in Wapakoneta, Ohio in 1930, Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon in 1969. From his early childhood, Armstrong was interested in flight. He took his first airplane ride in a Ford Tri-Motor over Warren, Ohio when he was just six years old and earned his pilot's license when he turned 16.
