Description: This photograph shows Governor James A. Rhodes riding a Ski Whiz, a snow mobile model produced by Massey-Ferguson between 1968 and 1974, with an unidentified man at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus, Ohio. The Ohio State Fair is an annual exhibition held at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus that showcases Ohio farming and commercial products and achievements. In the 1840s, farmers began to join agricultural organizations, and the state of Ohio began to take an interest in the challenges that farmers faced. As a result, the state government created the Board of Agriculture in 1846. The Board of Agriculture planned to hold the first statewide fair in 1849, but a cholera epidemic forced the fair's cancellation. The first Ohio State Fair was held the next year instead. The city of Cincinnati hosted the fair in 1850, which went on for three days. Ultimately, the Board decided that the state capital should be the permanent site for the state fair, and it moved to Columbus in 1874. By the 1870s, the state's railroad system had improved significantly, and it was much easier to travel from all parts of the state. The current fairgrounds, known today as the Ohio Expo Center, were completed in 1886. The Ohio State Fair has been held at these fairgrounds ever since. This photograph is part of the Ohio Expositions Commission Photograph Collection, a series of black and white photographs, the majority of which were taken between 1955-1968, which consist of livestock at fairs, primarily horses, and documents many types of State Fair activities, especially horsemanship and livestock activities. Kinley was also an avid lifelong photographer, and the bulk of the Harry Kinley Collection is comprised of glass plate negatives documenting the Kinley family, the city of Upper Sandusky and Wyandot County and surrounding areas. The Tuscarawas River is a principal tributary of the Muskingum River, 129.9 miles (209 km) long, in northeastern Ohio in the United States. Via the Muskingum and Ohio Rivers, it is part of the watershed of the Mississippi River, draining an area of 2,590 square miles on glaciated and unglaciated portions of the Allegheny Plateau. Description: Caption reads: "Trailer camp at Island Park operated by the city of Dayton. A completely equipped municipal camp, for campers and 'trailerites.'" In addition to parking facilities, city water, gas, electricity, and police protection are furnished for 50¢ a night or $3.00 per week." Island Park opened on June 20, 1914, on the former location of White City Amusement Park in Dayton, Ohio. White City had been destroyed in the flood of 1913, and interest to rebuild it was sparked after the Dayton Canoe Club held its first regatta here on July 13, 1913. The park became an ideal location for canoeing, boating, ice skating, concerts, dancing, and general recreation, and remained a point of recreational focus for decades. Description: Photograph of several young people on a roller coaster, taken by John Sheckler of Middletown, Ohio. The image was one of ten to win Honorable Mention in the Professional category of the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest. In August 1976, the Ohio American Revolution Bicentennial Advisory Committee (OARBAC) began the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest as part of a larger effort in Ohio to celebrate the 1976 American Bicentennial. The contest was meant to document "the spirit and character of the people and places which represent Ohio during [the] bicentennial year," and to create a permanent photographic archive of the year's festivity for use by future researchers. Both professional and amateur photographers submitted over 500 photographs for consideration, all taken within the state between January 1 and December 31, 1976. View on Ohio Memory.
