Description: Dated 1935-1940, this photograph shows a mustached man standing behind a bar with a mirror that runs the length of the bar and reads "Welcome" and "Auf Wiedersehen," or when we meet again. A cash register, which could have been manufactured by the National Cash Register Company, sits in the middle of the back counter. A sign for Wooden Shoe Beer hangs on the wall. It is unclear where this bar is located, though it could be in the Germantown area of Dayton, Ohio. Wooden Shoe Beer was produced by the Wooden Shoe Brewery in Minster, Ohio, in Auglaize County. Formerly known as the Star Brewery, it was renamed in 1913 to take advantage of the local Pennsylvania Dutch connection. Around 1919, the company was again renamed the Star Beverage Company, and began selling non-alcoholic drinks, due to prohibition. In 1933, Wooden Shoe Beer was reintroduced and officially changed the company name back to Wooden Shoe Brewery in 1940. Several management changes, and cost cutting beginning in 1950 affected the quality of the beer and the bar closed in 1954. Description: Dated ca. 1935-1940, this photograph shows the Canal Collector's Office in Dayton, Ohio. The photograph's caption reads "Where Mr. Patterson started in business as a canal collector" and a note on the reverse reads "Third and Kenton Sts. [Streets], Dayton, Ohio, where John H. Patterson, founder of the National Cash Register Company, started his career as a canal tolls collector in 1868, and opened a coal and wood business as a sideline." There's a sign on the side of the collector's office which reads "Coal and Coke." John H. Patterson founded the National Cash Register Company in Dayton, Ohio. Patterson (1844-1922), hoping the machines could save him money by reducing accounting errors in his supply business, purchased the patent rights to the cash register from James Ritty in 1884. Within six months, he reduced his debt and showed a profit. Patterson built the first National Cash Register factory on his family farm in Dayton in 1888. By the turn of the century, the company had become one of the largest employers in Dayton. Known for his strict training program for salespeople and health and education programs for employees, Patterson was closely involved in the daily lives of many of his employees. Description: Dated August 27, 1935, this photograph shows the cast of "Adam and Eva" taken from the rear of the Federal Theater. "Adam and Eva" was a play put on by the Federal Theatre Project (FTP), a New Deal project to fund theatre and other live artistic performances in the United States during the Great Depression. It was one of five Federal One projects sponsored by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Description: Dated July 1937, this photograph shows the central street of Union Village, also referred to as Shakertown. The first building on the left appears to be Marble Hall. A note on the photograph's reverse reads "View of the central group of buildings at the old Shaker settlement, 3 miles east of Lebanon, Ohio, formerly known as Union Village and commonly as Shakertown. Now the Otterbein Home, conducted for the aged and the orphans of the United Brethren Church. The entire tract of 4,500 acres formerly belonging to the Shakers is now know as Shaker Acres." Union Village was the first, and largest, Shaker community west of the Allegheny Mountains, and was established in 1805. By the 1940's, Union Village was the second largest Shaker settlement with a population of 700. The village was disbanded in 1912 and the last building was demolished in 1965. Description: Dated ca. 1900, this photograph shows a lock on Miami and Erie Canal south of Dayton, Ohio, in Montgomery County. Work began on the Miami and Erie Canal in 1825 and was completed in 1845. During the peak of construction, more than four thousand laborers worked on the canal, generally earning 30 cents per day plus room and board. Many recent immigrants to the United States, especially the Irish, survived thanks to jobs on the canals. Other people, like the residents of the communal society at Zoar, also helped construct canals to assist the survival of their community. Many of Ohio’s communities today, including Akron, began as towns for the canal workers. Most canals remained in operation in Ohio until the late 1800s. There is a short stretch in the Muskingum Valley near Zanesville still in operation today. By the 1850s, however, canals were losing business to the railroads.
