Description: Front page of the Columbus Dispatch announcing the death of President William McKinley, September 14, 1901. Just six months after his inauguration for a second term as president, McKinley was visiting the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, on September 1, 1901, when he was shot by anarchist Leon Czolgosz during a public reception. Though he initially appeared to be recovering well, his health took a turn for the worse and he succumbed to his injuries in the early morning hours of September 14th. His death meant the third successful presidential assassination in our country’s history, and the second for a president from Ohio. In the wake of McKinley's assassination, memorials to the fallen president abounded, including the creation of the McKinley Memorial in Canton, Ohio, completed in 1907. Two of his lasting contributions include far more vigilant security for U.S. presidents over the past century, and the selection of the red carnation as Ohio’s state flower in 1904. Description: Photograph of an unidentified man with a moustache and bowtie. On his lapel he wears a button supporting the McKinley-Roosevelt presidential ticket. This photograph was taken by traveling photographer Albert J. Ewing, ca. 1896-1912. Like most of Ewing's work, it was likely taken in southeastern Ohio or central West Virginia. Born in 1870 in Washington County, Ohio, near Marietta, Ewing most likely began his photography career in the 1890s. The 1910 US Census and a 1912-1913 directory list him as a photographer. A negative signed "Ewing Brothers" and a picture with his younger brother, Frank, indicate that Frank may have joined the business. After 1916, directories list Albert as a salesman. He died in 1934. The Ewing Collection consists of 5,055 glass plate negatives, each individually housed and numbered. Additionally, the collection includes approximately 450 modern contact prints made from the glass plate negatives. Subjects include infants and young children, elderly people, families, school and religious groups, animals and rural scenes. In 1982, the Ohio Historical Society received the collection, still housed in the original dry plate negative boxes purchased by Albert J. Ewing. A selection of the original glass plate negatives were exhibited for the first time in 2013 at the Ohio Historical Center. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This sample ballot was issued by Daniel J. Ryan, Ohio Secretary of State, before the election of November 3, 1891, intended to illustrate to Ohioans "the form of a state ballot under the new election law of Ohio." An explanation is given for voting a "straight ticket" (voting for all of the candidates put forth by one political party without having to mark each one on the ballot), as well as for individual candidates or propositions. The general voting process is outlined as well. Political parties represented in this election were the Republican, Democratic, Prohibition, and People's parties. An emblem decorates the top of each column; an eagle with arrows in its talons (Republican Party), a rooster (Democratic Party), a rose (Prohibition Party) and a plow (People's Party). William McKinley was the Republican candidate for governor, and would be elected over the incumbent James Campbell by a margin of over 20,000 votes. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph showing a harpist during a concert by the Canton Symphony and the Civic Opera Chorus taking place in front of the McKinley Monument in Canton, Ohio, July 2, 1976. The photograph was titled "Monumental Concert" by its photographer, R. C. Bixler of Canton, who submitted it in the Professional category of the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest. In August 1976, the Ohio American Revolution Bicentennial Advisory Committee (OARBAC) began the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest as part of a larger effort in Ohio to celebrate the 1976 American Bicentennial. The contest was meant to document "the spirit and character of the people and places which represent Ohio during [the] bicentennial year," and to create a permanent photographic archive of the year's festivity for use by future researchers. Both professional and amateur photographers submitted over 500 photographs for consideration, all taken within the state between January 1 and December 31, 1976. View on Ohio Memory.
