Description: This is a print illustrating the first building of Cincinnati College. It was founded in 1819 with William Lytle serving as the first president. Lytle donated his own money and raised money for the construction of the building. His father, also named William Lytle, donated the land for Cincinnati College from the land grant he received from Thomas Jefferson for serving in the Revolutionary War. The building opened and closed twice for a length of nine years. The law school, a department of Cincinnati College, survived in continuous operation until it merged with the University of Cincinnati in 1911. View on Ohio Memory.

Built of olive shale, the structure was a gift of the Church of the Ascension in New York City. Description: Hiram College Eclectic Institute, from "History of Hiram College, 1850-1900," by F.M. Green. The college, originally called Western Reserve Eclectic Institute, was founded by Amos Sutton Hayden of the Disciples of Christ Church. However, it was always nonsectarian and coeducational. Future U.S. President James A. Garfield attended the institute as a student from 1851 to 1853, and after attending Williams College, returned to the institute. He taught classical languages, mathematics, and geology, and served as principal between 1856 and 1861. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Original description reads: "University of Cinci. Walkway". It is unclear which building is shown in the photograph. The University of Cincinnati originated in 1819 with the founding of Cincinnati College. The college survived only six years, before financial difficulties forced it to close. In 1835, Daniel Drake reestablished the institution, which eventually joined with the Cincinnati Law School. Description: This image shows Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio. In 1856, the Methodist Episcopal Church established Wilberforce University near Xenia, Ohio, to provide African Americans access to a college education. The university was the first private black college in the United States. Its founders named the institution after William Wilberforce, a prominent eighteenth-century abolitionist.
