Description: League Park opened to the public on May 4, 1906 in Akron, Ohio. The park originally was located at the East End Grounds, but the location was unsatisfactory for play. The park then moved to the corner of Carroll and Beaver streets. The first game in the new stadium was between Newark and the Akron Tip-Tops. The Tip-Tops were a member of the Ohio & Pennsylvania League (O&P)which was considered to be a "C class" team. The Tip-Tops had much success, even winning the pennant from 1908-1911. In 1911, the O&P folded and the field became used by the University of Akron and Akron High School. It was also home to various semi-pro baseball teams. In 1920 the field became home to the Akron Pros, a charter member of the National Football League. Then in 1922 the field was sold to the Summit Growers association. Description: In 1886, the Society of Jesus established St. Ignatius College in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1923, St. Ignatius College became John Carroll University. John Carroll was the first Catholic archbishop in the United States. Twelve years later, the university relocated to a suburb of Cleveland known as University Heights. Description: Launched in 1832, the Charles Carroll was a side-wheel steamboat named after Maryland statesman and Declaration of Independence signatory Charles Carroll. This illustration appears in "Cincinnati; Story of the Queen City" by Clara Longworth Comtesse de Chambrun, published 1939. This illustration is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

The United Spanish War Veterans was a fraternal organization that eventually included men who fought in the Spanish American War, the Philippine Insurrection and the China Relief Mission. It was organized into "Departments" by state, and then into smaller groups called "Camps." The organization lasted until 1992, when its last remaining member died at age 106. The Spanish American War was the shortest war in United States history, lasting less than four months. More than 15,000 Ohioans served in the militia and the volunteer army during the war during this time. Of those, few were involved in major action, although 230 died of disease. The Treaty of Paris, negotiated in part by Ohioan Whitelaw Reid, formally ended the war on December 10, 1898, and Spain relinquished to U.S. control the territories of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. Description: Charles T. Webber created this oil painting in 1871. It depicts ten members of the Fighting McCooks, an Ohio family that sent fifteen men to serve in the Civil War. Daniel McCook, Sr. and his eight sons, together with his brother John McCook and his five sons, all fought for the Union in the Civil War. Daniel (1798-1863) and John (1806-1865) were born in Pennsylvania, and moved to Lisbon in Columbiana County, Ohio, in 1826. Daniel subsequently moved to Carrollton, where he served as Carroll County's first clerk of the court of common pleas. John settled in Steubenville, where he practiced medicine. When President Lincoln made the first call for volunteers, 63-year-old Daniel Sr. answered and his sons and relatives followed. Daniel Sr., Daniel Jr., Robert Latimer, and Charles Morris McCook were killed in the war. Charles T. Webber was a native of New York state. He lived in Cincinnati from 1860 until his death in 1911, and created hundreds of works, including portraits, landscapes, genre subjects, and historical scenes. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph of a bicycle race taken in Marietta, Ohio, 1893, most likely at the Washington County Fairgrounds. The winner of the race is identified as Walter Bell, who is seen second from the inside at the starting line. According to U.S. Census records, this is likely Walter D. Bell who was born in 1875 to William and Mary Bell of Marietta, and married Carrie C. Bell. He appears regularly in issues of the Marietta Daily Leader as an avid cyclist, involved with the Carroll Cycling Club and placing in many regional races. He was a woodworker at the Mountain State Manufacturing Company, based in Williamstown, West Virginia, just across the Ohio River from Marietta. He died in 1959, and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Marietta. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Dated 1876, this photograph shows a view of the Hocking Canal in Lancaster, Ohio, in Fairfield County. The Lancaster Lateral Canal was constructed between 1831 and 1834 with the Ohio and Erie Canal in Carroll, Ohio. After the canal was purchased by the state of Ohio, the canal was extended to connect Lancaster to Athens. The entire 56-mile canal, which started in Carroll and ended in Athens, was finished in 1843 and was known as the Hocking Canal. The canal was closed in the early 1890s, due in part to damage from flooding and competition from the Columbus and Hocking Valley Railroad. View on Ohio Memory.
