Description: This photograph showing a young boy driving a wagon pulled by two white horses was taken by traveling photographer Albert J. Ewing, ca. 1896-1912. Like most of Ewing's work, it was likely taken in southeastern Ohio or central West Virginia. Born in 1870 in Washington County, Ohio, near Marietta, Ewing most likely began his photography career in the 1890s. The 1910 US Census and a 1912-1913 directory list him as a photographer. A negative signed "Ewing Brothers" and a picture with his younger brother, Frank, indicate that Frank may have joined the business. After 1916, directories list Albert as a salesman. He died in 1934. The Ewing Collection consists of 5,055 glass plate negatives, each individually housed and numbered. Additionally, the collection includes approximately 450 modern contact prints made from the glass plate negatives. Subjects include infants and young children, elderly people, families, school and religious groups, animals and rural scenes. In 1982, the Ohio Historical Society (now the Ohio History Connection) received the collection, still housed in the original dry plate negative boxes purchased by Ewing. A selection of the original glass plate negatives were exhibited for the first time in 2013 at the Ohio History Center. View on Ohio Memory.

This photograph shows a man on a horse-drawn hay wagon on the 110 acre farm owned by W.H. Hannah near Bowling Green, Ohio. Hannah was ill with influenza and was unable to talk with the Department of Agriculture representative for long during the visit this photograph was taken. This photograph shows a man sitting on top of a horse-drawn wagon by a barn on the Brigham farm owned by J.S. Brigham in Bowling Green, Ohio. On 60 acres, Brigham grew tomatoes, cabbage, potatoes, celery, melons, and various other produce. Sixteen of the 60 acres were used for corn, and nearly six for alfalfa. Description: Carte de visite of the funeral obsequies of Abraham Lincoln in Columbus, Ohio, April 29, 1865. Lincoln's body began the trip from Washington D. C. back to his hometown of Springfield, Illinois, on April 21, 1865. The funeral train generally followed the route that Lincoln took when he traveled to Washington as President-elect in 1861. On Saturday, April 29, 1865, the train arrived in Columbus at 7:30 A.M. Lincoln's casket was taken to the Ohio Statehouse where he laid in state in the rotunda. The Statehouse was draped in black crepe for the occasion. Thousands of visitors came throughout the day to honor the fallen President. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph depicts a portable loader owned by the Hamilton Moulding Sand Company, Hamilton, Ohio, and made by the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company of Columbus, Ohio. It is loading molding sand into a horse-drawn wagon driven by a Hamilton employee. Molding sand was used in foundries to produce castings from molten metal. The Jeffrey Manufacturing Company, also known as the Jeffrey Mining Corporate Center, was established in 1876 as the Lechner Mining Machine Company in Columbus, Ohio by Joseph Jeffrey and Francis Lechner. The 1877 Wyandot County Directory lists Grundtisch Wagon Makers at S 4th St. and N Wyandott Ave. Harry Evan Kinley (1882-1969) was a native of Upper Sandusky. He was active in local events and organizations, and spent his professional career as a clerk at his father's department store, and later as a travelling salesman for the Marion Paper & Supply Company (1934-1962). He was also an avid lifelong photographer, and the bulk of the Harry Kinley Collection is comprised of glass plate negatives documenting the Kinley family, the city of Upper Sandusky and Wyandot County and surrounding areas. There are several men standing in the street along side horse-drawn carriages. This photograph is part of the Columbus Railway, Power, and Light Company collection, consisting of 53 glass plate negatives with images related to the Columbus Railway, Power and Light Company in Columbus, Ohio. In the mid to late nineteenth century, there were many power and streetcar companies in Columbus, Ohio. These companies eventually merged into four main companies, and by 1914 all the remaining companies merged to form the Columbus Railway, Power and Light Company. In 1933, with 1,509 employees, the company was the largest employer in Columbus, Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.
