Description: Snowy rural scene, from the Silas Martin Collection. Silas Martin (1841-1906) was born and raised in Westerville, Ohio, a small community north of Columbus. He studied with noted portrait painter John H. Witt, who is remembered for the numerous Ohio governors' portraits he painted. A Quaker, Fanning served in France in compassionate non-military service during World War I. In the 1920s, he joined the Ohio State University Art Department, becoming a full professor in 1924. Fanning was a skilled artist, especially talented at depicting bridges and buildings. He sketched and painted numerous buildings in Columbus and throughout Ohio. In 1950, Fanning became ill and was later diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. The disease affected his work, but he continued to paint and sketch. View on Ohio Memory.

The building was designed by architects Joseph N. Bradford and Joseph W. Yost, and constructed between 1889 and 1891. An addition was built in 1902-1903. Description: Opened in 1873, this building housed classrooms, labratories, a museum, a chapel and living and dining facilities for both students and staff. Description: Study sketch for a mural from 1939 done in pencil on brown paper. The sketch shows two men and a woman standing near a man seated next to a globe, presumed to be Sir Francis Bacon. All of the figures are in Elizabethan period clothing. The drawing has a grid of five squares vertically and six squares horizontally for 30 total squares. On a wall in the background there is some writing, "Francis Bacon / Francis Bacon" and scribbled lines below the name ending in "1939." On the left border there is text, "LORD CHANCELOR" [sic] and "LIGHT." There is red paint on the upper right corner of the drawing. On the back in pencil is written "Sketch for section of / W.P.A. mural in the Social / Administration Building / Library O. S. Univ. Campus / 1939-1940." It is one of the many studies for murals commissioned to Burkhart in 1930s, some of them funded by the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project. Burkhart (1905-1969) was an artist very well known to Columbus residents during his lifetime. He was born in Union Township, Ohio. After graduating from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1927, he moved to the East Coast and studied art under the direction of Charles Hawthorne, among others. He returned to Ohio in 1931 to teach at Ohio School of Art in Columbus. He painted 3,000 pieces during his career, many of which were portraits of Ohio residents. In addition to painting local street scenes and rural landscapes, he is also known for numerous self-portraits. He was married to Mary Ann Burkhart, née Martin (1918-1955), a famous New York art model who became an artist herself. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Reverse reads: "Greene County, Oct. 13, 1936. State 14-29-478- WPA 5181. Wilberforce University near Xenia, Ohio. View of portion of 3/4 mile road under construction." This photograph depicts two men working on road construction outside Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio. Wilberforce University is located on US 42, three miles from Xenia, Ohio on land that at one time occupied the Tawawa Springs summer resort. In 1856, the Methodist Episcopal Church established Wilberforce University near Xenia, Ohio, to provide African American access to a college education. The university was the first private black college in the United States. Its founders named the institution after William Wilberforce, a prominent eighteenth-century abolitionist. A number of African-American Ohioans attended the school during its early years. During the American Civil War, attendance declined as many students enlisted in the Union army. Wilberforce University closed in 1862. In 1863, the African Methodist Episcopal Church acquired ownership of the university. Under the direction of Daniel Payne, a bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, John Mitchell, the principal of a school in Cincinnati, and James Shorter, an African Methodist Episcopal pastor from Zanesville, Ohio, Wilberforce reopened its doors. The institution operated as a private university serving the African-American community for the next twenty-four years. In 1887, the State of Ohio began to provide Wilberforce with funds to help finance the institution, brought to an end the university's exclusively private status. The state also helped the university create a Normal and Industrial Department that eventually evolved into Central State University. Wilberforce University has experienced steady growth throughout the twentieth century. During the last decades of the twentieth century, the institution built a new residence hall, a student health center, a recreation and sports facility, and an administrative center. The university offers more than twenty degree programs and has exchange programs with universities around the world. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Plans were approved by the Board of Trustees to build the Armory in July of 1896. In September of the same year, the contract was given to Columbus Construction Company, and in 1898, the building was completed. This Armory served as a multipurpose facility for military science, and men’s and women’s physical education. The Armory was torn down in 1959 due to fire damage from the previous year. The Wexner Center for Visual Arts was built in the Armory's former location in 1989. View on Ohio Memory.
