Description: Reverse reads: "St. Raphael's Church, Springfield, O. Clark Co." Saint Raphael Church is located at 225 East High Street, at the corner of Spring Street, in Springfield. Designed by architect Charles A. Cregar, construction on this Gothic style brick building began in 1848. Construction on a very large addition began in 1892, and was officially completed with the dedication in 1898. This historic Roman Catholic church has a 184 foot tower, and a somewhat smaller one holding a 16, 000 pound bell. The stained glass windows, created by Mayer of Munich, were designed in the twelfth-century manner. In 1976, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Immaculata Church, Mount Adams / Mount Ida neighborhood, Cincinnati Ohio. Built 1859 for the German Catholic population of the area, from 1860 to present it has been a pilgrimage church. In 1977 it absorbed the nearby Irish parish of Holy Cross. Listed National Register of Historic Places (1978 -- #78002079). The Federal Writers described the pilgrimage: "On Good Friday devout Catholics perform a colorful pilgrimage up several flights of steps from the foot of E. Third St. in self-communion, the 108 steps to the CHURCH OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION, Pavillion and Guido Sts., receive blessings from a fragment of the true cross, climb steps to the Holy Cross Monastery and Church, and pass reverently through the dim "grotto" beneath the church and then into the church.' Description: Southwest corner Plum and Eighth Sts, 325 W 8th St., Cincinnati, Ohio. St. Peter in Chains Cathedral has been located in Cincinnati since the early years of Ohio statehood. As the population of the city and the state grew in the first decades of the nineteenth century, the original cathedral was not large enough. The Roman Catholic population in the region grew significantly, especially as German immigrants moved to the region. In 1840, Bishop John Purcell purchased the land to build a new, much larger, building. Construction of the cathedral began in 1841 and was completed in 1845. Architect Henry Walter designed the new cathedral, utilizing elements from classical Greek architecture in its design. At the time, St. Peter in Chains was the tallest building in the city. As Cincinnati continued to grow and change over time, the Cathedral's location proved to be detrimental. By the 1930s, few of the parish's members still lived near the church, and the neighborhood surrounding it had deteriorated. Archbishop John T. McNichols moved the diocese headquarters to Fairview, abandoning the old cathedral in 1938. This change only lasted until 1950, when Archbishop Karl J. Alter decided to return to St. Peter in Chains. Alter recognized that city leaders wanted to revitalize the downtown, and determined that a restored and enlarged cathedral could be an important part of the renovations. Work was completed by 1957, with the rededication ceremony taking place on November 3, 1957. Because of Cincinnati's prominence in the West in the nineteenth century and the diocese's continued leadership in the twentieth century, St. Peter in Chains Cathedral has hosted the ordination of many bishops, priests, and deacons. Description: Caption reads: "Old West Branch Quaker Church 3 miles N. of Union, Ohio, on the Garland Road." The Society of Friends, more commonly known as the Quakers, came to Ohio in the late 1700s and the early 1800s. The first Quaker to arrive in Ohio was George Harlan in 1795. By 1800, approximately eight hundred Quaker families were living in Ohio. The number of families had more than doubled by 1814. The Friends originally settled in eastern and southern Ohio and established Mt. Pleasant, Alliance, Salem, Lisbon, and several other communities in the state. The Ohio Quakers' yearly meeting took place in Mt. Pleasant. There, the Friends built a meeting house that could hold approximately two thousand people. The Quakers played a major role in nineteenth-century reform efforts including the temperance, women's rights, and abolition movements. View on Ohio Memory.
