Ohio Governors' State of the State Addresses
Description: Governor William Allen delivered an annual message to the General Assembly of Ohio on Jan. 3, 1876. These 13 pages are included in part 1 of the 1875 Executive Documents. Allen (1803-1879), a Democrat, was a Congressman before the Civil War, an opponent of the Lincoln administration during the Civil War, and reappeared in state politics to serve as Ohio’s governor from 1874 to 1876. While in office, Allen dealt with the corrupt Grant administration and the aftermath of the Panic of 1873, emphasizing economy and law enforcement.
