Description: This 27 page booklet contains the text of Governor Charles Foster’s message to the regular session of the 66th General Assembly on Jan. 7, 1884. Foster, a Republican, was Ohio’s 35th governor, serving two terms from 1880 to 1884. He supported gold redemption of paper currency and was elected on this sound money platform. During his administration, Foster worked to bring business methods into the state economy. Foster also supported the temperance movement by favoring a high tax on liquor. Following his terms as governor, he served as Secretary of the Treasury under President Benjamin Harrison. View on Ohio Memory.
