George White 1931 State of the State Address   Save
Ohio Governors Collection
Description: Governor George White delivered two messages to the General Assembly of Ohio on January 13 and 21, 1931. Both messages are included in a 22 page booklet. White (1872-1953), a Democrat, served two terms as governor of Ohio, from 1931 to 1935. As his administration fell squarely in the middle of the Great Depression, many of White’s actions as governor were in response to the economic crisis. To address the rapidly dropping state revenue, White reduced expenditures and supported new taxes that were less harsh on Ohio’s rural citizens, such as a controversial retail sales tax. He also actively supported the federal government in its efforts for relief and recovery. View on Ohio Memory.
