Description: This 22 page booklet contains the text of Governor Joseph Vance’s message to the General Assembly of Ohio on December 4, 1837. Vance (1786-1852), the first Whig governor of Ohio and 13th overall, served from 1836 to 1838. He was a strong advocate of public education as well as the completion of the canal system. Vance also served as a Brigadier General during the War of 1812 and a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, the U. S. House of Representatives, and the Ohio State Senate. View on Ohio Memory.
