Description: A hand written sympathy letter sent to Ada Young from Mrs. Ed. Mills in regards to the death of Col. Charles Young. Col. Young was the first African American to reach the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Army. In 1918, after being forced into retirement, due to health concerns, he rode on horseback from Wilberforce, Ohio to Washington D.C. to prove his physical fitness for duty. View on Ohio Memory.
