Description: A hand-written letter to “Pops” (Col. Charles Young) from his daughter “Kikik,” written in French in regards to her life in France. Col. Charles Young was the first African American to reach the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Army. In 1918, after being forced into retirement, due to health concerns, he rode on horseback from Wilberforce, Ohio to Washington D.C. to prove his physical fitness for duty. View on Ohio Memory.
