Heinisch Collection
Description: Effigy is a relief carving of a human face on a half-round, oval piece of stone. The nose is prominent. Eyes are deep-set and round under high, arching eyebrows. The prominent lips are stylized. Ears are small and stylized. There is a large vertical groove on the back side. The effigy is made of brown sandstone. Nose, lower lip and lower portions of both ears have been restored with painted plaster. Item was excavated from Heinisch Mound in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.
