Human head effigy   Save
Hopewell Mound Group
Description: Stylized effigy of a human head was made from a very thin plate of copper that was likely molded around a roughly triangular piece of wood or similar material. It has a prominent straight nose. The mouth has been incised, as have both eyes. Both ears are molded and incised; the right ear has been damaged. There are broken edges at the top of the head and just beneath the chin, suggesting that the effigy was originally larger. The copper is brownish gray but has corroded in some areas to pale green. Item was excavated from the Hopewell Site in Twin Township, Ross County, Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.
