Hopewell Mound Group
Description: Celt (ax) is a long, irregular rectangle shape that is widest at the bit end. The edges are rounded, except for the bit end, which has been sharpened. The texture is rougher from pecking (hammering) at the poll end. It is smoother on the bit end from polishing. It has been broken and repaired in several places. Minor damage is visible on the poll end. The slate is primarily dark gray with gray and very dark gray spots. Item was excavated from the Hopewell Site in Twin Township, Ross County, Ohio.
