: Bust-type birdstone is made of mottled very dark gray and pinkish white porphyry. It has an oval base with a concave bottom. The base flares upwards into the arched neck of a bird head effigy. Head tapers to a wedge-shaped beak. Two cylindrical projections extend from the head approximately 10 mm, in a location suggesting eyes. Although the function of birdstones is unknown, they might have served as highly-decorative spearthrower weights. Item was possibly found in Pickaway County, Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.
