'Plain Talk with Workingmen' broadside   Save
Ohio History Connection Archives/Library
Description: This 1880 broadside supports the election of James A. Garfield as U.S. president by arguing that Garfield is for a protective tariff, while the Democratic Party believes in a tariff only for revenue. The broadside argues that a tariff that protects American industrial products against foreign competition will be good for the workingman as well as for industry, because it will protect jobs. Similar to the earlier presidential campaign of William Henry Harrison, the Garfield campaign also emphasizes Garfield's experiences as a common man and "a workingman himself in his early days."
