'Hard Cider and Log Cabin Almanac'   Save
Ohio History Connection Archives/Library
Description: An almanac promoting presidential candidate William Henry Harrison, ca. 1840-1841. The front cover of the almanac is illustrated by a political cartoon emphasizing General Harrison's connection to the common man during his presidential campaign of 1840. At the right of the cartoon, Martin Van Buren, Harrison's opponent, attempts to stop the supply of hard cider, while Andrew Jackson, Van Buren's mentor and president before him, encourages him. Unfortunately, the original cover was poorly trimmed, so that we don't get the full effect of these two figures. The interior of the pamphlet is an almanac for 1841, as well as a campaign document for General Harrison. In addition to general information about the nation, this almanac provides the times of sunrise and sunset for every day of the year of 1841. In the absence of accurate weather predictions and electric lights, such information was very useful to farmers and others in the early republic. These pages were not included in the scanned portion of the almanac. The almanac also includes descriptions and pictures of various incidents of Harrison's military career. View on Ohio Memory.
