Logan Elm Collection
Description: This cabinet card shows two men standing by the trunk of the Logan Elm in Pickaway County, Ohio on June 11, 1899. Logan Elm State Memorial is said to be the site where, in 1774 Chief Logan, or Tahgahjute, of the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe delivered his powerful speech on Indian-white relations. Considered to be one of the largest elms in the country, the tree stood 65 feet tall, with a trunk circumference of 24 feet and foliage spread of 180 feet. It died in 1964 from damage by lightning and storms. The site is now marked by a plaque. The 4.6-acre site was acquired by the Ohio Historical Society in two portions, in 1912 and 1914. This photograph measures 6.5" x 4.5" (16.51 x 11.43 cm). View on Ohio Memory.
