: This photograph, taken near Medina County, Ohio, shows a field of bee hives owned by the A.I. Root Company. Amos Ives Root was born in 1839 in Medina, Ohio. As a young man he entered into the jewelry making business and opened a shop in Medina. He became interested in beekeeping on day when he saw a swarm of bees so large that they covered the window of his shop, dimming the light. In 1869 he began manufacturing a beehive in which beekeepers could extract the honey without killing the bees. In 1878 he purchased the Medina County Fairgrounds and built the A.I. Root Company. The A.I. Root Company began manufacturing beeswax candles in the 1920s and continued after Root's death in 1923. The photograph measures 8" x 10" (20.32 x 25.4 cm). View on Ohio Memory.
