: Portrait of Bishop Daniel Alexander Payne, 6th Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1863, Payne was instrumental in convincing that church to purchase Wilberforce University, a historically black college which had been earlier established by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1856.
