PERMISSIONS-ONLY REQUESTS

I have a copy of the digital image, but need to pay use fees for permission to use it. Can I order online?

DETERMINING FEES

How much will my order cost?
  • The Ohio History Connection charges a processing fee for the right to use an image for a particular purpose. These funds cover costs for providing digitization services, as well as the long-term care of the original historical materials. Payment of this fee for a digital image also includes the digital file itself. Service fees fall into the following categories:
    • Personal: $25/first image, $2/each additional image
      • Personal research/reference
      • Private (in-home or non-public office) display
      • Self-publishing, small print runs or local history publications with limited distribution
    • Non-Profit: $50/image
      • Academic publishing
      • Retail décor/public display
      • University presses
      • Non-profits with 501(c)3 status
      • Open educational resources
    • Commercial: $150/image
      • Projects such as textbooks, for-profit books, articles, advertising and exhibitions
      • Entertainment media
      • Users lacking non-profit status
      • Distributions of more than 1,000 copies
  • Orders are non-refundable after files/products have been delivered.
Will I be charged tax on images?
  • Ohio residents are charged 7.5% tax on digital files. Use fees are not taxable.
I am with a tax-exempt organization. May I order digital downloads online?
  • Yes. Before placing your order, email a complete and signed copy of your organization’s Sales and Use Tax Unit Exemption Certificate to [email protected]. Once your documentation is reviewed, your customer account will be marked as exempt from sales taxes.

FINDING IMAGES IN OHIOPIX

What images does OhioPix include?
  • OhioPix includes over 33,000 rights-managed images from the collections of the Ohio History Connection.
How do I find images in the OhioPix image database?
  • Browse by Topic by using the suggested topics on the home page to view a selection of images in the database that fit into those categories. You can also see an alphabetical list of these topics by clicking the menu button on the upper right of the page.
  • Search using the search bar at the top of any page to perform a Google-style search of images. Keywords will be searched in the title, description and other fields of the records. You can put quotes around a phrase to keep the keywords together (for example: “battle of fallen timbers”).
Where can I find other images from the Ohio History Connection collections?
  • OhioPix regularly adds new images, but the site represents only a portion of our organization’s collections. Not finding what you need on OhioPix? Ohio Memory has a broader selection of images that may fit your search, or explore the Online Collections Catalog to find out what else we hold in our archives.
  • Ohio History Connection staff are available to assist with finding specific images. For more information about searching our non-digital collections, please visit Archives & Library.

SENSITIVE COLLECTIONS STATEMENT

The Ohio History Connection Collections are comprised of many culturally significant materials. Some were created to be private or confidential and are now accessible as part of the historical record. Some contain offensive images, language or content which reflect the creators’ views or those of the period in which they were created, written or recorded. Many are not appropriate by today’s standards of respectful expression and actions. They serve as reminders of the importance of increased cultural competency, inclusion and equity.

We recognize our past role in promoting these perspectives, and we are working to ensure that the histories we preserve and interpret today encompass the experiences of all those who have called Ohio home. There is much work yet to do.

Please note that as part of our commitment to presenting American Indian perspectives, the Ohio History Connection complies with the directives of authorized tribal representatives regarding the public presentation of images and information from their ancestral communities. We do this in accordance with federal law and our American Indian Policy.
