Description: A Zanesville, Ohio, native, Samuel S. Cox (1824-1889) was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1857 to 1865. In 1853, Cox embarked upon a newspaper career, serving as the editor of the 'Ohio Statesman' in Columbus. Cox was an active member of the Democratic Party, and used his newspaper to further that party's influence in the state.
