Robert E. Lee was born on January 19, 1807, at Stratford Hall Plantation in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He entered West Point in the summer of 1845 and graduated second in his class. He served in the United States Army until 1861, when he resigned to serve in the Confederate Army. He was a general in the Confederate Army and surrendered to General Grant on April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House.
He died due to complications of a stroke on October 12, 1870, and was buried beneath the Lee Chapel at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. View on Ohio Memory.
