Description: Carte de visite photograph of General James Longstreet, from the William T. Sherman Photograph Album, ca. 1865-1880. James Longstreet was born in the Edgefield District in South Carolina on January 8, 1821. He entered the United States Military Academy in 1838, but was a poor student with disciplinary problems and graduated 54 out of 56 cadets in 1842. After serving in the United States Army, he resigned in 1861 to enter the Confederate Army. He served as the principle subordinate to General Lee, who called him "Lee's War Horse." After the war, he served the United States government as a diplomat, administrator and civil servant. He was the only senior Confederate officer to join the Republican Party. He died in Gainesville, Georgia, on January 2, 1904, where he is buried in Alta Vista Cemetery. View on Ohio Memory.
