Though Southern, Thomas elected to maintain his loyalty to the United States, and served with great distinction at Mill Springs, Stones River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and Nashville. Known as the "Rock of Chickamauga," he is considered to have been one of the top 3 generals in the Union army. Note: This photograph is incorrectly labeled with the name of Major General George G. Meade, who is best know for his service in the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. View on Ohio Memory.
