William Tecumseh Sherman was born in Lancaster, Ohio, on February 8, 1820. He attended the American Military Academy and graduated in 1840, ranked sixth in his class of cadets. He served in the Union Army and is best known for his 1864 "March to the Sea" to capture Savannah, Georgia.
When Ulysses S. Grant was elected president of the United States, Sherman succeeded him as Commanding General of the U.S. Army. He served in that capacity from 1869 until 1883.
Sherman died in New York city on February 14, 1891, and is buried in Calvary Catholic Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri. View on Ohio Memory.
