Description: This photograph shows an exhibit of books and personal possessions of well known western author Zane Grey at the Ohio Historical Society's former museum location. The organization was formed in 1885 as The Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society and eventually became known as the Ohio Historical Society. Originally the group’s collection was held at the Statehouse, but in 1894 they moved to Orton Hall on Ohio State University’s campus. They remained on OSU’s campus until 1970 when they moved to their present location at the Ohio State Fairgrounds. Zane Grey was born on January 31, 1872, in Zanesville, Ohio. He won a baseball scholarship to University of Pennsylvania where he studied to become a dentist. Once he graduated, he realized he was not happy in the dental profession so he decided to become a writer. His first novel was called “Betty Zane” and was based on frontier stories in Ohio. When he was unable to find a publisher, he decided to move out west in hopes of better fortune. His first publication, “The Heritage of the Desert” was published in Harper’s Magazine in 1910. By the time he died in 1939, he had written over ninety books including westerns, short stories, a biography of George Washington, and several children’s stories. Some of his most popular novels are “Spirit of the Border”, “Desert Gold”, “The Last Trail”, “The Call of the Canyon”, and “The Thundering Herd”. This exhibit includes a few of his books, a bag, a knife and holster, a boot, several photographs, and other items. The building in this picture is located at Fifteenth Avenue and N. High Street. The title of the building was transferred to OSU in 1970 when the Ohio Historical Society moved to the Fairgrounds. The building was named after Joseph Sullivant, a member of the Board of Trustees. It has housed the Music and Dance Library, the Fine Arts Library, the Zoology Museum, and the Hoyt Sherman Art Gallery. In 2013, the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum officially opened in the space. View on Ohio Memory.
