Description: Letter dated October 17, 1863, from Samuel Burks Taylor (1841-1867) of the Confederate States of America to his sister. At this time, Taylor was being held in the Ohio Penitentiary as a result of participating in Morgan's Raid, and this letter describes his prison environment. Taylor was one of six men who, along with General Morgan, escaped from the Ohio Penitentiary several weeks later on the night of November 27, 1863. He was recaptured in Kentucky, and sent to Fort Delaware in 1864 until the end of the war. He died in 1867. View on Ohio Memory.
