: This 2.55 by 2.75-inch (6.5 by 7 cm) oil painting on ivory shows Eleanor Worthington, the wife of Ohio political leader Thomas Worthington. She was born Eleanor Swearingen in present-day West Virginia. Orphaned at an early age, she inherited land and slaves. In 1796, she married Worthington and the couple moved to Ohio soon after. The Worthingtons freed their slaves and brought several of them to Chillicothe. Eleanor Worthington (1777-1848) was the mother of ten children, all of whom survived to adulthood. She frequently ran Adena, the family estate, while her husband traveled and after his death in 1827. View on Ohio Memory.
