Ohio History Connection Archives/Library
Description: During the Civil War, Confederate General John Hunt Morgan led his cavalry troops on a 1,100-mile raid into Union lands. Morgan started in McMinnville, Tennessee, on June 6, 1863, and was captured near West Point, Columbiana County, Ohio, on July 26, 1863. On July 18-19, 1863, Addie Brown, a young woman in Ironton, Ohio, wrote this letter to her mother about Morgan's Raid. She reports that the businesses in town were all closed, and that Morgan and his men "are thought to be within 20 miles of us poor 'Ironton folks.' " The letter is eight pages and also discusses family matters and Addie's music classes. View on Ohio Memory.
