Description: Carte de visite of General James Shields, who served with the Union Army during the Civil War. Born in County Tyrone, Ireland, Shields moved to Kaskaskia Illinois and eventually served as a Corps commander at the Battle of Kernstown. Though at the battle his troops won the first, and only, tactical defeat of General "Stonewall" Jackson (Shields was wounded during the battle, as well), Shields performed poorly throughout the rest of the campaign, and resigned.
