Description: This color image is an exterior view of Old Town Hall and Academy, Tallmadge, Ohio, ca. 1960-1969. The two-story white building is located within the Tallmadge Town Square Historic District. The Village of Tallmadge was founded in 1807. The first academy building was erected in 1815. The historic building seen in this image was erected in 1859. It was both a town hall (first floor) and the academy's new home (second floor). Until 1876 the academy served students from northeast Ohio who desired advanced courses not offered by local school systems. Besides functioning as the town's assembly hall and auditorium, the building also housed various city government and law enforcement offices during its history. During its early years Old Town Hall hosted touring and local theatrical troupes that performed on its stage. In 1971 the City of Tallmadge made the second floor available to the Tallmadge Historical Society for a museum. Nine years later the Tallmadge City Council leased the entire building to the Society for ninety-nine years. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This image shows the front and side facades of the Franklin County Courthouse, which is located in the heart of Columbus' County Government Center. This building was built between 1884 and 1887 by George H. Maetzel. It was the county’s third courthouse and made of Berea sandstone. Before its destruction in 1974 due to irreparable structural faults, it was one of the finest examples of Second Empire architecture in the United States. An annex was added in 1951. Description: The hand-sewn wool flag was carried by Company F, 148th Ohio Volunteer Infantry of Washington County (Ohio). The 36 stars are arranged symmetrically in canton pattern of six rows by six rows. Nevada added the 36th star in 1864 (October 31). Comprised of the 96th Battalion of Vinton County and the 46th of Washington County, the 148th mustered out of Marietta on May 18, 1864 under Colonel Thomas W. Moore. On May 23 the Regiment was involved in an accident on the Union Railroad leaving three soldiers seriously wounded. The 148th Ohio Volunteer Infantry mustered out September 14, 1864. By the war's end they had lost 2 officers and 37 enlisted men from disease. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph from the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus is of 23-year-old Willie Caldwell of Cuyahoga County. The caption at the bottom reads: "No. 223, Willie Caldwell, of Cuyahoga County, Legally Electrocuted June 14th, 1939, for the Murder of Mr. Fred Raymot, at Cleveland, Ohio.” In 1885 the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus, Ohio, became the location for all executions, which previously took place in the various county seats. In 1896 the Ohio General Assembly mandated that electrocution replace hanging as the form of capital punishment. The Ohio Penitentiary regularly offered tours as well as souvenir photographs and postcards of the building and prisoners on death row. A total of 315 prisoners, both men and women, were executed in the electric chair known as “Old Sparky” between 1897 and 1963. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph of a lookout platform at Fort Ancient, Project No. 7 - A. The platform, 16' x 30', with stone floor, wood safety rails and cardinal points laid in the floor. Overlooks a section of the Miami River south. Project started August 7, 1934 and completed January 7, 1935. Fort Ancient features 18,000 feet of earthen walls built 2,000 years ago by American Indians who used the shoulder blades of deer, split elk antler, clam shell hoes and digging sticks to dig the dirt. They then carried the soil in baskets holding 35 to 40 pounds. Portions of the walls were used in conjunction with the sun and moon to provide a calendar system for the peoples. View on Ohio Memory.
