Waynes Soldiers Burial Ground photograph  Save
Description: Photograph shows the site of Major John Mills grave in Greenville, Ohio. Mills was a part of General Anthony Wayne's soldiers in the Revolutionary War. In late 1793, Wayne ordered the construction of Fort Greene Ville, named for his friend and comrade in the American Revolution Nathaniel Greene. Wayne's army was marching against Native Americans along the Maumee River. Wayne sought to punish the natives for St. Clair's Defeat in 1791. The fortification was located roughly five miles north of Fort Jefferson at what is now Greenville, Ohio. The fort had walls that were ten feet high, and the stockade enclosed roughly fifty acres of land. Wayne used Fort Greene Ville as his encampment during the winter of 1793-1794 and as a staging area and supply depot for his attacks against the natives in 1794. View on Ohio Memory.

Boy with dog and rifle  Save
Description: This is a photograph of a young man wearing a hat and short pants, holding a Daisy Air Rifle and standing by his dog. A marking on the negative reads: "AJ Huffman Mt Zion WVA April 25, 1902." This photograph was taken by traveling photographer Albert J. Ewing, ca. 1896-1912. Like most of Ewing's work, it was likely taken in southeastern Ohio or central West Virginia. Born in 1870 in Washington County, Ohio, near Marietta, Ewing most likely began his photography career in the 1890s. The 1910 US Census and a 1912-1913 directory list him as a photographer. A negative signed “Ewing Brothers” and a picture with his younger brother, Frank, indicate that Frank may have joined the business. After 1916, directories list Albert as a salesman. He died in 1934. The Ewing Collection consists of 5,055 glass plate negatives, each individually housed and numbered. Additionally, the collection includes approximately 450 modern contact prints made from the glass plate negatives. Subjects include infants and young children, elderly people, families, school and religious groups, animals and rural scenes. In 1982, the Ohio Historical Society received the collection, still housed in the original dry plate negative boxes purchased by Albert J. Ewing. A selection of the original glass plate negatives were exhibited for the first time in 2013 at the Ohio Historical Center. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: A view of the Netherland Plaza Hotel at night, from the block bounded by Fifth, Race, Sixth and Elm Sts., downtown Cincinnati. Colby shoes, Grayson and Lerner shops visible in foreground. Located 35 W 5th St., downtown Cincinnati, currently the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza. The Art Deco complex by Walter W. Ahlschlager and William Delano, comprised the Netherland Plaza Hotel, the Carew Office Tower and the Emery Arcade. The ground level shopping arcade, which served as the main lobby of the complex, spanned the distance of a city block, connecting to the offices on one end and the hotel on the other. Conceived by civic leader John J. Emery, Jr to revive the downtown area as a city center, the complex took the place of an Emery hotel, an Emery shopping arcade, and a popular department store. The structure was constructed and decorated in a little over a year, and completed in 1931 during the Great Depression. Designated National Historic Landmark, 1994-82003578. View on Ohio Memory.
