Description: A hand-written letter to Ada Young from her daughter “Kikik,” thanking Ada, (her mother) for the two long nice letters and the small picture inside the letters. Her father, Col. Charles Young was the first African American to reach the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Army. In 1918, after being forced into retirement, due to health concerns, he rode on horseback from Wilberforce, Ohio to Washington D.C. to prove his physical fitness for duty. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Illustration depicting the "Great Hinckley Hunt," which took place on December 24, 1818. Farmers in the area of Medina County saw the wildlife as a natural enemy to the safety of not only their families but their crops as well. It was decided that four lines would be formed by over 500 men from around the township of Hinckley, who would then proceed to hunt towards township's center. In one day of hunting, the men killed three hundred deer, seventeen wolves, twenty one bears, and countless small game. Only one man was injured. Description: This photograph shows a bridge over the Tuscarawas River in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: A black and white photograph features the exterior image of the front view Lincoln Memorial located in Washington, D.C at the west end of the National Mall. Finished in 1922, the Lincoln Memorial was built in memory of President Abraham Lincoln. The memorial was designed by architect Henry Bacon. The exterior, inspired by ancient Greece architecture, features 36 columns (the 12 columns located in front are clearly visible). Above the columns, among the carved embellishments are the carved names of the 36 Union states and the dates when they joined the Union. On the top frieze, inscribed in the marble are the names of the 48 states presented, in 1922, at the time of the dedication of the memorial. View on Ohio Memory.
