Description: View of the west side of the Ohio State Office Building taken from the Civic Drive and Broad Street intersection, Columbus, Ohio. Groundbreaking for the Ohio State Office Building took place on November 19, 1929. The building, located at 65 South Front Street in downtown Columbus, took the site of 34 businesses. The building, designed by architects Harry Hake, Frank Bail and Alfred Hahn, is noted as an excellent example of architecture from the Art Deco period. Construction began on October 31, 1930 and the cornerstone was laid on May 16, 1931. An explosion occurred shortly after three o'clock on the afternoon of April 14, 1932. Description: This is a winter photograph of two horses pulling a sleigh in which a man and a child sit bundled up beneath furs. The background appears to be a residential area with frame houses, and a fence on a hillside also within view, all covered in snow. This photograph was taken by traveling photographer Albert J. Ewing, ca. 1896-1912. Like most of Ewing's work, it was likely taken in southeastern Ohio or central West Virginia. Born in 1870 in Washington County, Ohio, near Marietta, Ewing most likely began his photography career in the 1890s. The 1910 US Census and a 1912-1913 directory list him as a photographer. A negative signed “Ewing Brothers” and a picture with his younger brother, Frank, indicate that Frank may have joined the business. After 1916, directories list Albert as a salesman. He died in 1934. The Ewing Collection consists of 5,055 glass plate negatives, each individually housed and numbered. Additionally, the collection includes approximately 450 modern contact prints made from the glass plate negatives. Subjects include infants and young children, elderly people, families, school and religious groups, animals and rural scenes. In 1982, the Ohio Historical Society received the collection, still housed in the original dry plate negative boxes purchased by Albert J. Ewing. A selection of the original glass plate negatives were exhibited for the first time in 2013 at the Ohio Historical Center. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph showing Floyd B. Chapman of Columbus, Ohio, at right, with a fellow serviceman identified as "PFC Gilkyson." Both are seen in military uniform, and handwriting on the back indicates that the photograph was taken in San Bernardino, California, on November 15, 1943. After receiving a Ph. D. at the Ohio State University and working for the Fish and Wildlife Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Chapman (1911-1984) was inducted into the Army Air Corps in November of 1942. He was stationed at various posts around the United States during World War II, as well as overseas in India and China. Following his military service, Chapman continued his career as a naturalist and field ecologist for the Ohio State Division of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Ohio Division of Wildlife. He also worked as resident ecologist at Malabar Farm and as horticulturist for Inniswood Garden Metro Park until his death in 1984. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This is a guidon of the 95th Headquarters Troop of the 95th Infantry Division. The top half of the pennant shaped flag is red and the bottom half is white. There are white appliqued numbers "95" on top half of flag. The white gauze material is approximately 18 cm long attached to sleeve of the flag. A Metal pin is attached to gauze. The pin is a croix de guerre with crossed infantry swords in the middle of a Roman(?) head with a laurel wreath around it. Around the head are the words "Republique Francaise." It has machine sewn, applique. Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee the efforts to restore the fragile flags. Some of the battle flags were on display on the Plaza Level of the Ohio Historical Society from 1970 until 1989. For conservation reasons, the flags have been in storage since 1989. In the 1960s, the collection was photographed and commercial artist Robert Needham painted illustrations of many Civil War flags. Description: This image shows the front facade of the Ohio Statehouse. This building, in the Greek Revival style, was constructed over the course of 22 years, ending in 1861. There were five principle architects, including Ohio-born Nathan B. Kelley, who was eventually fired because the extra flourishes he added to the design were deemed too expensive and too ornate for the original design of the building. Inmates from the Ohio Penitentiary constructed the foundation and the ground floors until skilled tradesman complained that the prisoners were taking away good-paying jobs, prompting a change in hiring practices. Bartley (1783-1870) was a Whig who served as Ohio’s 18th governor, from 1844 to 1846. The state banking system was the major issue of his administration.
