Description: The dining tent and its diners that was set up during a camping trip taken by rubber manufacturer Harvey Firestone, inventor Thomas Edison and automobile manufacturer Henry Ford in 1921. This trip was one of many that Ford, Firestone, and Edison took together between 1916 and 1924. Harding was invited to their camping trip in Maryland in July of 1921, which became known as "Camp Harding." The circular dining table was nine feet in diameter and had a Lazy Susan on the top so that diners could reach any of the dishes they wanted. It also folded so that it could be transported easily. Description: The Republic Steel Corporation Collection (MSS 192) consists of 13,000 black and white photographic negatives, 2,000 color photographic negatives, and many 35 mm slides which document Republic Steel Corporation’s main production facilities and its subsidiaries, 1941-1975. This collection also includes images of social events such as company picnics, award banquets, and dances. Founded in 1899, Republic Iron and Steel Company was a steel production company based in Youngstown, Ohio, and the result of a consolidation of 34 steel mills across the United States including the Mahoning Valley’s Brown Bonnell Iron Company, Andrews Brothers and Company, and Mahoning Iron Company. From 1927-1937, Republic Iron and Steel Company expanded its reach by acquiring a number of other companies such as Trumbull Steel Company in Warren, Ohio, and Central Alloy Steel Corporation in Canton, Ohio. With its expansion, Republic Iron and Steel Company became the third largest steel producer in the United States behind United States Steel Corporation and Bethlehem Steel Company, and changed its name to Republic Steel Corporation to reflect its new status. After the outbreak of World War II in 1941, the Corporation’s production increased by 33%. This increased production continued into the 1950s and 1960s as the company continued to be one of the leading developers of steel production technology. Due to a myriad of factors including decreased demand for steel from automobile manufacturers and imported foreign steel, steel sales declined and in 1984 the Republic Steel Corporation was purchased by LTV Corporation, which led to the closure of the Youngstown plant. LTV filed for bankruptcy in December 2000. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This is a photo of the old U.S. Post Office and Courthouse in Columbus. The U.S. Post Office and Courthouse, sometimes referred to as the Federal Building, is located at 85 Marconi Boulevard at the corner of Gay Street. Completed in 1934, it is the Federal Government's contribution to the civic center. It occupies a triangular tract on the east bank of the Scioto River, and housed the main post office, Federal courts and offices, and the U.S. Weather Bureau station. The 4-story building is of sandstone and marble construction, with classic lines. Richards, McCarty & Bulford, of Columbus, designed the structure, which cost almost $1, 800, 000 to build. Description: This is a right profile view of the wedding dress and poke bonnet worn by Sarah Pearson in 1823 in Miami County, Ohio. Made of muslin and linen, the dress features an empire waist with a drawstring that ties in the back and a reinforced yoke lined with linen, with long and full sleeves. Sarah married her second cousin, Moses Pearson, and they had eight children, Rhoda, Mahalah, Timothy, Anna, Joshua, Abram, Nathan and Serepta. Sarah Pearson was a Quaker and member of the Mill Creek Friends Meeting House in Miami County. In 1837, Moses and Sarah were sent by the Indiana Yearly Missionaries to the Shawnee Indians who had recently been removed from Ohio to the present-day Kansas City, Missouri. Sarah died on February 7, 1844, and was buried in Union Joint Cemetery in Ludlow Falls, Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Carte-de-visite of Civil War Brevet Brigadier General Andrew Hickenlooper (1837-1904), who later served as Lieutenant Governor of Ohio. The photograph features a bust view of a young, Federal officer with a mustache and thin goatee. The rank on his shoulder boards features one star, indicating Brigadier General. Andrew Hickenlooper was born in Hudson, Ohio on August 10, 1837, to parents Andrew and Abigail Hickenlooper. He enlisted in the Civil War as a Captain on August 31, 1861, and was later promoted to Brigadier General and Lieutenant Colonel. Hickenlooper served through the Atlanta campaign as an engineer with distinguished honor and participated in Sherman's March to the Sea, and the advance through the Carolinas. After the war, Hickenlooper was appointed United States marshal for the Southern district of Ohio and served two terms as city civil engineer. In 1879, he was elected the 15th lieutenant governor of Ohio under Governor Charles Foster. He was married to Maria Lloyd Smith and lived at 838 Dayton Street, Cincinnati, Ohio. He died on May 12, 1904, and is buried in Spring Grove Cemetery. Cincinnati, Ohio at Gravesite: 53-167-2. On January 3, 1912, a statue in honor of Hickenlooper was erected in Vicksburg National Military Park. View on Ohio Memory.

2. Read and Agree

Ohio History Connection Use Agreement and Conditions of Reproduction

  1. One-Time Use. The right to reproduce materials held in the collections of the Ohio History Connection is granted on a one-time basis only, and only for private study, scholarship or research. Any further reproduction of this material is prohibited without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
  2. Use Agreement. Materials are reproduced for research use only and may not be used for publication, exhibition, or any other public purpose without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
  3. Credit. Any publication, exhibition, or other public use of material owned by the Ohio History Connection must credit the Ohio History Connection. The credit line should read “Courtesy of the Ohio History Connection” and should include the image or call number. The Ohio History Connection appreciates receiving a copy or tearsheet of any publication/presentation containing material from the organization’s collections.
  4. Indemnification. In requesting permission to reproduce materials from the collections of the Ohio History Connection as described, the requestor agrees to hold harmless the OHC and its Trustees, Officers, employees and agents either jointly or severally from any action involving infringement of the rights of any person or their heirs and descendants in common law or under statutory copyright.
  5. Reproduction of Copyrighted Material. Permission to reproduce materials in which reproduction rights are reserved must be granted by signed written permission of the persons holding those rights.
  6. Copyright. The Ohio History Connection provides permission to use materials based on the organization’s ownership of the collection. Applicants assume all responsibility for questions of copyright and invasion of privacy that may arise in copying and using the materials available through Ohio Memory.
    Warning concerning copyright restriction: The copyright law of the U. S. (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to a photocopy or reproduction. One of the specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship or research.” If a user make a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement.
