Description: This image shows the front entrance and clock tower of the Seneca County Courthouse. This is the county's third courthouse, and it was built between 1884 and 1886 by architect Elijah Myers. During the 1940s, renovations modernized the Beaux-Arts building including the removal of the statue of Justice on top of the clock tower, lowering the tower's height from 148 feet to 107. Paired fluted columns and a triangular pediment frame the two-story archway that encloses the south entrance. In 2012, this courthouse was torn down. View on Ohio Memory.

Child and dog photograph  Save
Description: A child and a dog are captured in this photograph by traveling photographer Albert J. Ewing, ca. 1896-1912. Like most of Ewing's work, it was likely taken in southeastern Ohio or central West Virginia. Born in 1870 in Washington County, Ohio, near Marietta, Ewing most likely began his photography career in the 1890s. The 1910 US Census and a 1912-1913 directory list him as a photographer. A negative signed "Ewing Brothers" and a picture with his younger brother, Frank, indicate that Frank may have joined the business. After 1916, directories list Albert as a salesman. He died in 1934. The Ewing Collection consists of 5,055 glass plate negatives, each individually housed and numbered. Additionally, the collection includes approximately 450 modern contact prints made from the glass plate negatives. Subjects include infants and young children, elderly people, families, school and religious groups, animals and rural scenes. In 1982, the Ohio Historical Society received the collection, still housed in the original dry plate negative boxes purchased by Albert J. Ewing. A selection of the original glass plate negatives were exhibited for the first time in 2013 at the Ohio Historical Center. View on Ohio Memory.

Ohio Constitutional Convention officers  Save
Description: Officers of the 1912 Ohio Constitutional Convention on the dais of House Chambers in the Ohio Statehouse, Columbus, Ohio, April 1, 1912. In October 1871, Ohio voters called for the state government to organize a constitutional convention. The convention met for the first time in May 1873 in Columbus, and included fifty members of the Republican Party, forty-six members of the Democratic Party, and nine Independents. Despite having received a mandate from Ohio residents to replace the Constitution of 1851, the convention acted slowly. It took a full year before the convention had a new constitution to submit to Ohio voters. From May to August 1873, the convention met in Columbus before reconvening in Cincinnati in December 1873, where it remained until May 1874. In August 1874, the convention sent the new constitution to Ohio's voters for ratification. Voters clearly rejected the constitution by a vote of 102,885 in favor of ratification and 250,169 opposed to the document's adoption. The state did not hold another constitutional convention until 1912. View on Ohio Memory.
