He was assassinated in the first year of his second presidential term while on a cross-country tour. The dedication ceremony was held on September 14, 1906, the five-year anniversary of McKinley's death, and was attended by Alice Roosevelt Longworth, daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt. Description: This banner is comprised of rectangular panels of blue, yellow and white cotton stitched together. The banner is stamped "2 1/2 x 4" and has brass grommets and white cotton twill on one side. The banner was displayed on showboats and dates from around 1930. The dimensions are 120 cm by 70 cm. The banner was probably flown on the Eisenbarth showboats. Mrs. E. E. Eisenbarth of Marietta, Ohio, donated this banner to the Ohio Historical Society in 1986. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: The Hayes Memorial Library and Museum was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 30, 1916 in the Spiegel Grove State Park, Fremont, Ohio. The four-page program lists the morning and afternoon programs. At 8:00 am the building was "thrown open...for the exclusive use of the school children and teachers of the Public Schools and of St. Ann's and St. Joseph's Parochial Schools, on the way to the cemeteries to decorate the graves of Soldiers." Governor Frank B. Willis made a presentation, as did George Kinney, mayor of Fremont, and United States Senator Warren G. Harding. The front cover includes an image of the Hayes Memorial Library and Museum and the back depicts Spiegel Grove. The program measures 5" by 7" (12.7 by 17.8 cm). The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center contains the residence of Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th president of the United States, a library and museum, and the tomb of the president and his wife Lucy Webb Hayes. The library and museum building houses the personal papers and mementos of the Hayes family, the Civil War, and the White House. The tomb is encased in a monument of Vermont granite from the president's father's farm. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph showing Major General Robert Beightler, Commanding General, 37th Infantry Division, presenting a medal to an unidentified soldier. The 37th Infantry was nicknamed the Buckeye Division because it was originally comprised of Ohio National Guard units. The division went into combat in April 1943 on Guadacanal, Solomon Islands and spent over 600 days in action before the end of the war, more combat time than any other division. Description: There is no record of who made this quilt but the initials "D.K.H." are embroidered on it. It is thought to have been made for the 1910 Amish wedding of Deliah Kempf and Abner Helmuth in Holmes County, Ohio. The quilt is pieced in a double four-patch pattern using solid colors of brown, brown-red, blue, gold and tan wool. The blocks are placed on point with alternating plain blocks. The back is tan cotton. The quilting is done in a diamond grid through the center and in a quadruple cable in the one border. The binding is blue. This quilt has the typical dark plain colors preferred by the Amish. The donor purchased this quilt from their daughter. The size of the quilt is 185cm x 154cm (73 x 61 inches). View on Ohio Memory.

Description: The Republic Steel Corporation Collection (MSS 192) consists of 13,000 black and white photographic negatives, 2,000 color photographic negatives, and many 35 mm slides which document Republic Steel Corporation’s main production facilities and its subsidiaries, 1941-1975. This collection also includes images of social events such as company picnics, award banquets, and dances. Founded in 1899, Republic Iron and Steel Company was a steel production company based in Youngstown, Ohio, and the result of a consolidation of 34 steel mills across the United States including the Mahoning Valley’s Brown Bonnell Iron Company, Andrews Brothers and Company, and Mahoning Iron Company. From 1927-1937, Republic Iron and Steel Company expanded its reach by acquiring a number of other companies such as Trumbull Steel Company in Warren, Ohio, and Central Alloy Steel Corporation in Canton, Ohio. With its expansion, Republic Iron and Steel Company became the third largest steel producer in the United States behind United States Steel Corporation and Bethlehem Steel Company, and changed its name to Republic Steel Corporation to reflect its new status. After the outbreak of World War II in 1941, the Corporation’s production increased by 33%. This increased production continued into the 1950s and 1960s as the company continued to be one of the leading developers of steel production technology. Due to a myriad of factors including decreased demand for steel from automobile manufacturers and imported foreign steel, steel sales declined and in 1984 the Republic Steel Corporation was purchased by LTV Corporation, which led to the closure of the Youngstown plant. Description: This blue silk flag with gold fringe served as the regimental colors of Ohio ex-prisoners of war. Manufactured in the United States around 1865, this side of the flag features a gold-outlined crest with a brown background. Inside the crest is an image of an eagle perched on a soldier's camp roll and rucksack with crossed bayonets behind it. Three chain links at the bottom of the rucksack connect to a hand-painted image of a dog attacking a ragged man on the ground. The image is bordered with serrated edges and a cannon in each corner. A red scroll outlined in gold below the crest features gold text that reads: "DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR." View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Illustration of McGregor Cottage published in "A Personal History of Ulysses S. Grant" by Albert Deane Richardson in 1885. Ulysses S. Grant was born Hiram Ulysses Grant in Point Pleasant, Ohio. During the U. S. Civil War, Grant was promoted to the rank of General and granted command of the Union army by President Abraham Lincoln. After the victory of the Union over the Confederacy, Grant's popularity led to his election as the 18th President of the United States in 1868. The cottage in McGregor, New York, is where Grant finished his memoirs and passed away due to lung cancer in 1885. View on Ohio Memory.
