Sherman album contains photographs of a large number of Civil War officers that possibly served with General Sherman or were known by him. Farragut was born on July 5, 1801, near Nashville, Tennessee. At nine years of age, he was commissioned as a midshipman in the United States Navy, due to the influence of his adoptive father. He was the first Rear Admiral, Vice Admiral and Admiral of the United States Navy. He died at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on August 14, 1870. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: A view of the cast house tapping machine at the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company's Campbell Works, East Youngstown (Campbell), Ohio, ca. 1910-1919. The tapping gun opens a hole and allows the molten iron to flow from the blast furnace. The opening is kept sealed by clay until the furnace is ready for tapping. The clay is then drilled out of the tap hole until the iron skull is met. Next, the iron skull is burned through with an oxygen lance. Then the liquid iron is allowed to flow out of the furnace. The tapping machine is moved by a crane that attaches to the gun. View on Ohio Memory.

Ironton 1937 flood  Save
Description: Two men in a small boat in front of the remains of Layne's Tailor Shop in Ironton. The greatest volume of water ever known to pass along Ohio's southern shores flooded all Ohio River communities during the last two weeks of January 1937. With damage stretching from Pittsburgh to Cairo, Illinois, 1 million were left homeless, with 385 dead and property losses reaching $500 million, further worsened by the fact that it occurred during the Great Depression and just a few years after the Dust Bowl. Crests were 20 to 28 feet above flood stage and 4 to 9 feet above previous records. Six to 12 inches of rain fell in Ohio during January 13-25, 1937, totals never before or since experienced over such a large area of Ohio. January 1937 remains as the wettest month ever recorded in Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Handwritten on reverse: "Jeff. Co. Here is a land mark. The old city building. Torn down years ago." This photograph shows the old City Building, located at 304 - 314 Market Street in Steubenville, Ohio. At the time of this photograph, it appears that the building is being used as offices for a variety of business, the signs for which are difficult to read, and is in an almost dilapidated state. The top right window on the front of the building is a post of the "V of FW." In front of the building is a car with an advertisement which reads: "Family and Commercial Photograph. Ideal Studios." A new building has been built on this site, which houses the Steubenville Engineering Department. A sign for the "Grand Opening" of the Tempest with John Barrymore can be seen as well as a sign for US 7 on a post outside the building. Also visible in this photograph is The Munker Jones Company building (far left), which was located on the corner of Third and Market Street. Munker was a purveyor of dry goods and clothing. 2. Read and Agree

Ohio History Connection Use Agreement and Conditions of Reproduction

  1. One-Time Use. The right to reproduce materials held in the collections of the Ohio History Connection is granted on a one-time basis only, and only for private study, scholarship or research. Any further reproduction of this material is prohibited without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
  2. Use Agreement. Materials are reproduced for research use only and may not be used for publication, exhibition, or any other public purpose without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
  3. Credit. Any publication, exhibition, or other public use of material owned by the Ohio History Connection must credit the Ohio History Connection. The credit line should read “Courtesy of the Ohio History Connection” and should include the image or call number. The Ohio History Connection appreciates receiving a copy or tearsheet of any publication/presentation containing material from the organization’s collections.
  4. Indemnification. In requesting permission to reproduce materials from the collections of the Ohio History Connection as described, the requestor agrees to hold harmless the OHC and its Trustees, Officers, employees and agents either jointly or severally from any action involving infringement of the rights of any person or their heirs and descendants in common law or under statutory copyright.
  5. Reproduction of Copyrighted Material. Permission to reproduce materials in which reproduction rights are reserved must be granted by signed written permission of the persons holding those rights.
  6. Copyright. The Ohio History Connection provides permission to use materials based on the organization’s ownership of the collection. Consideration of the requirements of copyrights is the responsibility of the author, producer, and publisher. Applicants assume all responsibility for questions of copyright and invasion of privacy that may arise in copying and using the materials available through Ohio Memory.
    Warning concerning copyright restriction: The copyright law of the U. S. (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to a photocopy or reproduction. One of the specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship or research.” If a user make a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement.
